Went back to the Victorian coin hotspot today for another look, did pretty well within a pretty small area before a large storm killed off the fun - wasn't too keen on being a lightning prod.

I am pretty much down to locating iffy targets, though still came up with a few Victorian coins and few other interesting items in only a short period of time. Didn't hit any silvers, though did get three very nice HP's from 1865 x2, and 1873. Other targets included three buttons, of which one was silver gilded, and the very interesting remains of a pretty gruesome looking skull ring. The ring appears to be old, and is lined in a layer of copper vs coated. The skull is wearing a hat/helmet of some sort, almost Darth Vaderish/Samurai looking. It was sitting in the ground at a similar depth to the older coins, hence the assumption on the age.

The scrunched up metallic item appears to be silver plate over copper, and has an eagle, wreath and part wording on it, not sure what it originates from.

The older coins aren't actually too deep here, mainly around 5 - 7 inches down, as the clays tend to hold up anything from sinking too deep over the years. Seems that some of the humdinger signals from shallow Victorian coins were often overlooked by past detectorists as shallow non-ferrous junk. My very first Victorian penny was only found about 4" down earlier in 2015 on well detected ground, so best practice is to dig all repeatable targets, regardless of ideal target ID or assuming depth equates to older finds. Although this is unique to this specific area, and doesn't necessarily translate to others.

The biggest issue is getting to them, as the the ground is usually extremely hard packed at the bottom of the hole. I usually start off with the lesche shovel to do the plug, and nibble away at the packed soil around the target with the deteknix digger, just to ensure I don't accidentally hit the coin.

Generally speaking, if you get barely a whisper from the pinpointer after digging a plug here, 90% of the time it will be something Victorian or even Georgian era. There have been three George III coins found here so far this year that I know of, plus the gothic florin we found a month or two ago.

Will be having another shot at this site tomorrow, and will hopefully get some footage for another you tube clip - with sound this time.

Well done GP That machine of yours just keeps giving, What ever your doing don't change a thing because the both of you seem to well matched,

A lot of folks over power the machine and too much gain often ID's good items as junk, I know I have done it my self and the newer the machine is to a person the easier it is to make that mistake, I have been Guilty of that before now, lol

There is something inscribed on the helmet, though half of it is missing, so impossible to make it out.

Yes the scribble is hard to work out. It reminds me a lot of the SS skulls

I don't think the ring is too old, here is a pic of an extremely similar ring, only dates back to the early 80's. Most original German SS rings were in solid silver.

It was a nice mild day for detect today, though unfortunately the coins weren't flowing, more like a lead and button day at the Victorian coin site. Just one coin this outing, a rather bent up 1864 threepence, also managed a small nick on it, but you get that on the hard jobs. I ended up bending the 3p reasonably flat again to try and view a date.

Five buttons was a reasonably good haul for this site, the largest is named "savage hall", whilst the oval shaped button was something different for a change.

Will try and get short clip up later, though had to use my smartphone as the Go-Pro was flat - doh!

Just a quick hunt on some pretty atrocious ground, won't be heading back there any time soon due to the number of rocks under the surface. Best coin was the 1946 sixpence, the 1943 mower chopped threepence was strangely a surface find. The pennies were from 1922, 1917, 1944, 1947 & 1942.

The gold Sunnex lighter was a bit of a shock, complete with LCD clock and gold plate finish. The owners name is engraved on it, and dated March 1981.

Here's pretty much the same lighter, different brand, slightly different finish.

Some good stuff down among the rocks at times,..best digging that stuff when the ground is damp and moves easily.
Bet they lamented the loss of the lighter at the time too,...and still though, you were on the PDs and scored silver regardless.
Small straight 6d down there out of those rocks.

HI don't know anything about the Deus but looks interesting only thing I was wondering was can you get other coils for it or can you only use the dd?
