For those of us that are satisfied with Windows 7, and do not wish to change to Windows 10, what should you do to keep it running when it is no longer being updated or serviced by Microsoft. Has somebody got the knowledge to set out an action plan to keep it going and be useable well into the future.
I certainly could benefit from advice - on how often to back up, where to back up, need to format drives, will anti virus programs keep windows 7 free from harm after it it is no longer protected by Microsoft?

Thanks Ned

Windows 7 wont suddenly stop working because Microsoft stop supporting it.
Just keep a good firewall & antivirus running & up to date. Don't store passwords & personal or important data on it. Use a separate hard drive or USB.
Over time tho new or updated software may not run on older versions such as W7. Make sure any software updates are compatible with your version of W7 & don't update if its not. Ultimately if you want the newer or updated software you may have to update to the latest version of Windows

I like windows 7 it does what it was meant to do, having said that I use windows 10 on two machines 1 laptop and 1 desk top, but still have windows 7 running on another desk top be coursers i can :) The laptop I did fit a bigger HDD (750Gb) others have 1Tb works for me.

I've had W10 running on my desktop computer for a few years now. Love it and glad I moved on up.
Also, I never buy brand name computers. Brand name computers generally come with bloatware (tons of crap you don't need) - HP is bad for this - AND you are also paying for the brand name.
I purchase my computers from reputable, private, specialist, computer stores.
I usually pick out what motherboard, processor, hard drive/s, ram and graphics card etc. and I have them install my chosen operating system.
At the end of the day, it usually saves me money and I get exactly what I need. Switch on my new purchase, install my favourite apps and away I go.
I swear by Bitdefender Security software. https://www.bitdefender.com.au/
Best in the world by far. (as claimed by many internet security experts.) And priced similarly to Norton and MacAfee.
NOTE: Bitdefender comes from Norway (I believe) and when the yearly subsciption is due, ONLY buy from the parent company (it costs half as much as their Australian distributor charges).
Oh, I also run the free version of Wise Care 365. https://www.wisecleaner.com/wise-care-365 It does much the same job as the CCleaner mentioned earlier.

Updated to Windows 10 today after many years of uming and aring and our IT guy said it wont be long before your current system will be really slow. My wife and I have been dealing with him for 15 years so why wouldnt I believe him, its a no brainer.
So far I am very happy as it is very similar to my current system.
I have to put my trust in those that know, more often, stress on Those That Know.
