When i say its near new it's still square front and back and its 2 inches longer than any iv3 seen. Mostly they ended up sharpened to a point but this miner mustn't have done much work

Looks like my one :)

Love the stories and photos of the old picks. A little bit more information for those playing at home.

The thin style of hammer/pick combos are called escutcheon hammers :) The are designed to chip an area and leave the surrounding area undamaged, hence "escutcheon" you also see these with teeth inserts at hardware stores. These are the older variations.

Edit - Modern version, they are called scutch hammers these day, probably because no one could remember or spell escutcheon http://www.bunnings.com.au/trojan-38mm-single-slot-scutch-hammer_p5560174

As for the Pelican pick this is different again, it has a curved base with a larger hollow near the rounded end. These are great for moving a lot of material and I am surprised I have not seen anyone using them? We used to sell hundreds of these years ago. https://www.blackwoods.com.au/part/09798711/pick-pelican-cw-handle-115kg

The adze handle mentioned looks close as well http://www.bunnings.com.au/810mm-hardwood-replacement-adze-handle-_p3360754

Great find on the old hammers and picks good to see someone is going to look after them and not be lost to rust away.

Ha ha...

Nice find GD, looks really nice mate.

Cheers for the other one too...My mate the chippy will sort out a good handle from spotted gum no probs. Have you got an old photo of an original one so we can get the profile right?

Thanks for the info westaus.

MJB the maker is hytest if you google it you will see a plethora of amazing engineering over many years. Around here they are known as a ballarat pick as the only miners who didnt seem to use them were the Cornish who cane with their own style of tools. Heres an earlier one with an extra bit of support at the back of the handle. I reckon this is what the handles would have looked like in their hay day.

Today I thought it would be fun to try and attach my new GoPro Hero 4 to the shaft of the ATXThe harness works ok but the image is to shaky especially when digging a hole and the camera gets in the way, this way I can just gut the detector down and watch myself digging. I've still to try it out in the field but so far it looks promising.

Love the pelican pics Westaus, don't care to much for the straight handle ones, got a few timber ones in the shed though ;)

Cheers.

Haven't fire up yet and already a complaint.

Headphone socket, what the hell is wrong with a phono plug?

Only been standard for a gazillion years, we're not even talking stereo signal here, you need 2 connections, not some onholy 6 pin connector.
