Hi all

Just introducing myself. Haven't attempted any prospecting or fossicking before but the wife and I are trying to get into it with the kids for some fun.

We are from the Canberra region and hope to hear from anyone with helpful advice on the hobby or anyone from our region willing to have us tag along and learn.

?

Welcome Rosswab.

I would go out and get a Permit before doing any prospecting in NSW. read through the forums and seeing what advice people are giving. there are plenty of places around Canberra.

Also if interested in Coin and relic detecting there are a fair few places and don't need any permits to do so

The only permits required in NSW are for NSW State Forest areas (must have a NSW State Forest Fossicking permit) & some TSR's (Travelling Stock Routes - may require Local Land Services permit/permission to fossick).
NSW State Forests permit here: http://www.forestrycorporation.com.au/visit/activities/fossicking
All other private & crown lands do not require a permit but obviously private land as well as various crown lands do require permission of the landholder's, leaseholder's or land managers. All National Parks managed land such as National Parks, SCA's, Wildlife Reserves, Karst Conservation Reserves etc. are off limits to fossicking.
Best to have a look at this site for NSW Guidelines (has NSW Guide to Fossicking): http://www.resourcesandenergy.nsw.gov.au/miners-and-explorers/fossicking-in-nsw
Edit: add NSW State Forests link
