My father had a 186X2. He thought he was a boy racer at the lights--embarrassing really!! He treated it like a baby all the time running on super fuel. My future brother in law got into his good books by cleaning all of the carbon out of the head . SLURP, SLURP. Had the carbies tuned and away it went. Not too bad for a holden.
My first car was a new Mazda 1500 in 1968 (missed the 1800 by 3 mths). Still a reliable and fairly quick lil 4 cyl car. till I wrote it off DUI. no license either.....paid it off 3 yrs after I wrote it off. Rapid learning curve that one. :8 :8

HP 179 bored to 192,
Balanced
60/40 cam,
yella terra head stage 2,
Solid lifters,
SSS Headers modified back to behind the passenger seat,
Can AM 2 1/2 inch exhaust,
SET 186 SSS Twin Stromburg duel throat, (Rare as rare even then. )

Man that thing could get.

But open road cruising, 33 to 36 mpg.

Bit of cork clogged the mid oil feed to the Cam at 60mph. :awful:

Talk about detonation. :argh: :argh:
Sold the blown motor for $1500.00
I would hate to say what the Carbies would be worth now. 8.(

Sounds pretty good, that's close to how I had mine,

I found a site where I can still buy all those Carbies over here and the Delortos and Webers,

As you probably read in an early post, I did the exact same thing as you jaros, rode off my pride and joy at the time a hq 2 door Monaro also dui :N: oh well at least were here to tell the tale :Y: and yes a rapid learning curve as I had to be cut out of the car, got a helicopter ride to hospital, and that was where I spent the next 3 months on my back in traction :N:
It wasnt fun I can tell ya that 8.(
The only fun part about it was getting a daily full body wash from one of the cute nurses :p ;)

I used to like yank V8s, and had quite a few of them. Mustang, Camaro, Corvette, Mercury Cougar and Cyclone Comet to mention a few. Then one day I bought a real car; Porsche 911 Carrera. Had 4 Porsches altogether. One I bought with a bag of nuggets. (true story)

Really upset a Porche driver a few weeks back off at the lights in my FG mk2 XR6 turbo ex HWY patrol........ The look on his frowny face was priceless, he also had his girlfriend in the car..... :D Was no Carrera GT but still the falcon even surprised me.

Hey heatho do you know any of the spec,s or extra mods they did on ya xr6?
They obviously would have done a few little tweaks to it :Y:

Not sure, I've read a bit on the XR6 forum, some say they do and some say they are stock standard apart from the police upgrade Brembo brakes (which are bloody nice by the way). Maybe it just got run in properly doing some high speed stuff on the highways, was a country cop car so not too much wear and tear doing city stuff. Goes bloody well though, top car to drive. A few mods and they can really get the power up to some pretty serious KW's. 270KW and 540NM (I think) standard but also has a 10% overboost which automatically kicks in under the right conditions such as air temp and other factors.

Would like to do a few runs on a 1/4 mile drag strip to see what she can do.

I built a couple of very Sneaky cars over the years, My XY looked like a stock 6cyl, But it blew the doors off a 911 Porsche going down the Bruce highway, and my 71 2 door VH Valiant was a very wild thing to drive and I once got from Nambour to Brisbane in less than 35 minutes In a Black Mad Max XB Falcon I had.

No Mate not anymore, but somewhere I still have the photos and I still know how to build them, I sold the Black XB to buy the VH Commodore, and In a moment of madness I sold the VG Hardtop, It was a beast that started life as a 245 hemi with a borg-warner 35 Automatic, which ended up with a few suspension mods with a full on Race engine and a 3 speed Pacer gearbox, But it was too fast for the Road. It was like driving a 60's/70's NASCAR race car, fun but dangerous.

Oh and my Valiant 2 door was the VG Valiant Regal not the VH, The VE VF and the VG Valiants were basically the American Dodge Dart which is why I liked them,

So the rear carby has a manual choke with non on the front. ??

They were the same as a HQ 253 carby but manual choke.
Not an Auto one.

No,
A HD.
Before the HR.
They were called a Hurried Design.
The body shells sat in the hills for a year before they started
to build them.
That is why they rusted out real quick.
Especially the utes that were HT modified.

On which motor/Carbies ?

Red 6.
either Hp 179 ss
Had single down draft 149 twin Stromies
or the full whack.
186 SSS HR Premier.
Had the SSS badge on the bottom of the guards,
The top of the guards were rounded.
1/2 way from a HD.
LSD with deep dish 7 inch rims all round.
Also 4 gauge instrument cluster.
My Father had the running gear out of one
that was written off.
Very rare car.

Nice, I forgot about all this stuff, They were very happy times without a care in the world, I can remember a fair bit of it and I still have a German Carb balancer just like the one I had in Aus, Only this one I bought from a guy in the US via ebay.

I think cars like the LC Torana and such were much better than what we have now, Weighing only 1030kgs and with 200hp+ compared to these modern over weight 1750kg warts with 130 to 170hp, And you did not have to be a rocket Technician to work on them.

German Gauges. ?
I used 2 pieces of clear pipe full of water.
Up to 4 for quad SU's.
I much liked the Stromburg version with a diaphragm
instead of slides.
Only way to tune them was with a pair of hygro scopes as above.
I now use a set of gauges to tune me BMW bike but in a pinch,
I would simply make a pair of them to do the same.
Very, Very accurate.
In other words,
Inch's of vacuum.

When I was a kid I lived smack on the top of the mountain.
During race week, especially the bike races we were packed up and sent to stay at friends in town and dad would stay to protect the place as they would steal anything not nailed down and burn what's left that was.

Eventually dad was an ambo who work in the pit area, mum was a caterer for the Steve Masterton team, one brother worked for Clancy Motors and another one worked for Giddings Datsun.
I did get to do a lap of the mount with Alan Moffet which was fun, but I can never bring myself to watch the race again.

Did you know the Rayner's? They had an orchard at the bottom of Conrod Straight. I play golf every week with Stuart Rayner.

Rayner was a well known family in the area. Can't say I knew them personally but know the name and know the orchard well.

Hey Heatho, the Porsche You blew off probably had a couple of plug leads off.

Ridge runner, there are 911s and then there are fast 911s. If you had come up on a 911RS or RSR all you would have seen would have been taillights disappearing in the distance.
