Contacted by a landline telephone call from a John Felix. His accent was not likely a John Felix accent but another nationality I will add...

Pretended to be from Telstra.

Claimed Telstra was shutting down my internet service (I am not a Telstra subscriber) because of an NBN connection interruption, and that I needed to use a command run file dialogue to access my computer internal operating system to override the 24 hours downtime I was to experience.

I requested his information to provide proof of this action by Telstra where he said his ID was D1097 and his call back telephone is 02 80061694.
He also requested me to use only my mobile telephone to respond to the 02 80061694 as proof of Telstra origin.

Whilst he was detailing his required actions by myself to perform these system amending tasks I googled the telephone number.
Result is here - https://au.unknowndial.com/number/0280061694

His pitch was then skewed to; someone at home in the night time was downloading porn with corrupt files and I also needed his assistance to override the damage done to my computer's internal operating system. He unfortunately for him called my business number which only operates til 5pm....

I had him working hard for nearly 20 minutes, when I advised I was really googling his information.

Our most courteous Telstra operative then said " You M*** F**** F**** Y**** and hung up.

I must add that his phone suffered call centre background noise so it is a live operating scam.

been happening many years.

the telco's are responsible for allowing number spoofing via voip connections.

they haven't done anything in the 5+ years i've been complaining to them about it.

good luck! :D

We have had that same call several times in the last couple of months.Rang our provider every time and been told everything is fine.By the way,we are not with Telstra either.

somewhere here i've got a database that links blocks to the provider.

i'll try dig it up.

i've had to fix my fair share of :poop: caused by these scammers.

the worst ones are able to put any number they want in the CID field.

my favourite example of this is when I was at a clients house, doing computer stuff.

he'd bought a new mobile,so I also helped him set up this new mobile.

new number,brand new activated sim.

5 minutes after setting it up,he gets a call from an indian accented bloke, apparently from telstra.

the typical tech support scam,go to this website, install our crapware, hand over your money.

are these people actually working at telstra and other places?

Our landline is on constant answering machine, answers after 4 rings and have found that the number of 'private' or 'numbers we do not know' calls we are getting has now dropped off from around 3 to 4 a day to possibly one per week over the past couple of months, we only answer if we know the number or a message is left to identify the caller and what they are calling about, no message, I am not interested. :bomb:

Just a side note. Have been talking to a few people who have covered the camera facing them on their laptops and other devices, so I covered my camera on the laptop and within 2 hours got a message from Google about their security measures, possibly just a coincidence, but made me wonder.

There are pictures of Mark Zuckerberg on his laptop and he also covers his camera with a bit of masking tape. So if his does it there must be something suss going on.

Whenever I have gotten dodgy call asking me to do this and that to my computer, I enjoy playing dumb nd keeping them on the phone as long as possible.
They usual have a few swear words for me when I inform them of my ruse

I have been known to tell them some one is at the door, put the phone down , cover with a cloth or pillow or whatever and leave it for half an hour or so . Never there when I return.  ;) cheers.

I haven't had a landline in about 10 years now (never set it up when it went over to voip)
If I do business with anyone I request their phone number that they might call from & I put that in my mobile's phone book. These days I rarely answer a call with a hidden ID (they have something to hide, right!), or an unknown number. If I don't know the number, chances are I don't know the person & have no need to speak to them. Exception is if I failed to get their number but am expecting a call, which is not very often.
I tell my friends & family, if they ever need to call me from a friends mobile, to first send me a txt to advise me they will call.
I avoid telemarketers this way too :poop:

Just to add to what sh*ts me off
So many Australian firms are employing overseas puppets to answer our problems ' not only are they hard to understand but there hopeless at fixing the actual problem !
I get so frustrated trying to understand the polite lolly pop sounding robots who repeat the same scripted stuff over & over '

I wish there was legislation that only allowed Aussies to answer Aussies & keep these jobs here !
