I'm no deterctorist, but wishing you well in your quest to find ever it is you are after.

What are you aiming for gold or coins?

Let us know how you go.

i took delivery of it today, but i wont be able to actually get out and use it till probably next weekend..

right now, aim is to try and find coins and relics.. i want to go to the local showground which has been there for over 150years and see if anything is there..

who knows, down the track i would love to go out gold detecting..

I've got an old detector but haven't really done anything with it.
Should go & check out some local grounds too for a detect.

Good luck out there.

took it for a 20min spin in the bottom paddock last night... found a brass barrel bolt after 5min.. the paddock is on landfill may have have had something to do with it, who knows what else is in there... hopefully its the start of something good

Thanks wooster. These will come in handy for me as I've just bought a 305 today. Might go down to the Swan River this weekend and see what I can find. A guy I met in the shop today says he finds tiny pre-decimal coins at up to 8in at the river's edge with his 305.

thanks for that wooster . do you know what gold rings & jewellery tones at ? i'm so sick & tired of pull tabs i discriminate everything under 22 or is that 24 ? that's when i'm out coin shooting. & just leave it in all metal when relic hunting. but i'm only new to this hobby. some of the older pull tabs & metal screwcap lids still show up as 32.

g'day all. My brother & i both have 305's now & we want to get 1 or 2 coils. what do you guy's have or use? we both like relic hunting & coin shooting & just searching old places. is it worth spending the money on other coils? & what sort of increese in performence can we expect?

I purchased the eliptical 18.75khz minelab coil and wasn't too impressed with its sensitivity on small targets, but coins are ok - I thought the standard concentric coil did better with regards to sensitivity despite being lower khz, also better depth.. The small 6" coils are good for trashy areas and target seperation, and have a smaller footprint to get into tighter spaces, I guess it just wasn't made for small gold on the 305, it's really meant for coin/relic hunting. If you want greater depth, the large Coiltek 15" WOT coil seems be the go. Nel coils also sell various sized DD coils for the 305.

I suggest learning about how the stock coil performs maybe on various coin targets buried at different depth, to get used to the target iD's, depth indicator and target tones before moving on to more specialised aftermarket coils. The ID's can vary depending on how deep the target is, and say if a coin is sitting on its side vs sitting flat under the surface. Gold jewelry ID's can also vary dependant on depth and the size/type/shape of the target. :)

thanks goldpick. because jewelry is abit few & far between, i've been mainly looking for $1's & $2 coins & fifty's for now. i've toned on all the jewelry that my girlfreind has & my mum ect & it's kinda all over the place. it seems to be down in that trashy 5 & 10 cent coin & pulltab zone. yes you are right we both have heaps to learn about our std machines. although should pick things up a bit quicker now i'm not sharing machines. i started having issues with my pro finder 25 last night. i changed battery & still was playing up. thanks again mate.

Hi guys, brand new hobbist here. Just brought new Minelab 305. Took it down the beach this morning for its first run. Found about 40 bottle caps, 2 tent pegs and 5 cents in the car park when I got out of the car. Any tips you guys can offer would be great.

Thanks for these Wooster. They will come in handy, as I am learning with my 705. Cheers Monty. :)
