Hi there,
Just joined this site. I live in Sydney. I have always wanted to get a metal detector and now have decided to do so. I havent got one yet. Was considering the Bounty Hunter Pioneer 505. What would people recommend ?
What sort of areas or places do people go to search ?
Thanks
Robyn

Hi Robyn, welcome to the forum, I know a prospector that has found gold nuggets with a bounty hunter but just buy the best entry level one you can afford. Garrett Ace 250 is also a good entry level detector. Once you have been out a few tines you can decide if this hobby is for you and then invest in better equipment hopefully with the proceeds of all those gold nuggets you are going to find :)

Have a look at www.goldtrails.com.au and download the Guide it should point you in the right direction.

Regards
Grant

Thank you Grant,
Been doing a bit of reading, Im really eager to have a go. I am also a genealogist , so love hunting through history and absolutely thrive on finding things whether it be info or material things. I have a feeling this will be a new addiction.
Can only dream of all those great finds that I have been reading about lol.
Will definitely look into the Garrett Ace 250.
Thank you for the link,

Robyn

Welcome to the forum Robyn, and great to see you're getting into the detecting scene. I'm sure the forum posts will be helpful with info on most of the detectors out there. Ask as many questions as you like and a variety of advice and opinions will come your way.

Best of luck with your research and look forward to seeing some pics of your finds and chatting on the forum threads.

Cheers wal.

Hi Robyn and welcome, you sure found the right place for all the info you need to get started. Geneology, history and fossicking for relics or treasure all go hand in hand I'd say.

Welcome! im new too! and a Sydney sider too, i'm going with the Minelab Eureka gold detector :) haven't got it yet! but saving :D
See you around! :D

Hi Robyn
Welcome to the Forum.
I would recommend you do a lot of research before you spend your money, the detectors mentioned in this thread are good units, but if "Gold" prospecting is your main aim? then to avoid frustration & disappointment have a real good look at an SD2200 (only available 2nd hand) they can range from $1500 to $2300 give or take, this detector will give you a much better chance of success for a little more of an investment.
Research the difference between PI (pulse induction, SD2200) & VLF (very low frequency, Eureaka Gold)
There are other options in the PI range but I don't know anything about them so will not comment.
I think the best option is to borrow or hire a detector to see if it is to your liking.
Hope this helps.
cheers

Hi Robyn and welcome :) BH 505 seem to be going for 100 second hand and around 300 new. Really depends on what you are intending to prospect. For general use like coins etc should be fine just like the garret ace as gcause pointed out. Good luck :)

Thanks all, more interested in coins than anything else.
And hello to Vorseth , a fellow sydneysider who joined today :)
I think I will go for either the Garrett Ace 250 or the Bounty Hunter Pioneer 505 as a 1st detector. Havent really got the money to go over the budget of around $300. Im pretty sure Im going to enjoy it, if not, wouldnt be hard to sell, but pretty sure this isnt going to happen.
Currently saving madly for my new machine lol.
Thanks all ,
Robyn

keen on coins hey? :D Any particular coins? I'm more keen on just the gold side of things, old coins and stuff would be cool but i wana see that yella! lol

Morning Robyn,

I too am a newbie to this but if your after coins and relics, I too have purchased the Garret Ace 250 just for that sole reason. I am currently practicing on beaches to get myself use to it and have found its quite good / accurate for finding all sorts of things there.

I have a friend who is more avid and is giving me advice to go to old historical places and search around there to see what I find. The tip I can pass on from them to you (which I cant wait to try) is if you're hunting around an old colonial site for coins, if you can find where the dining or kitchen was, or communal sit down by the fire to eat n drink, search the area as coins were often dropped in those areas when cowboys would come in, put their feet up and the odd coin may fall out down a crack.

Cheers,

B

Hi Bsellin,

Thank you for your message. Was very interested to know how the Garrett Ace worked. I am now leaning towards that, had a lot of people recommend it.
Any tips you are able to pass on or areas, would be very much appreciated.
I love history, antiques, old coins and I have been doing family history for over 10 years. So its just a matter of finding places where people of long ago socialised and lived ( especially around 1930 lololol ). I know not to go onto private property. I have a lot of history books here of our pioneers, so will start going back though there. I have a lot of ancestors from out Camden way. So Im thinking around there, Campbelltown and Goulburn. As I could go to these places easily on my own. My parents live in Goulburn. I havent got the interest of my hubby just yet unfortunately, hopefully I will eventually get him interested.
As for what Im searching for , mainly coins. But my absolute biggest dream ( I would keel over if I did find one ) is of course the 1930 penny lol
Been doing a lot of reading over the last few weeks on coins especially and I would like to find some old ones.
I have spotted a couple of Garrett Ace 250's on ebay, one of them comes with a lot of equipment, another is 2nd hand for $100 US, got my eye on both , both 2nd hand. Just a matter of getting the money together.
Thank you for letting me know about the Garrett Ace. Im sooo keen to start, Im starting to itch lolol

Hey Robyn,

The ready is hard to come by lately so go to a reputable dealer and don't get ripped off on flea bay. The dealer will give you a warranty even on their second hand gear. There are a lot of cheap metal detector and coils knock offs out there so go to a dealer and get their advice.

Regards,

Grant
