Hi tony, im also reasonably local to drake and keen to find some areas out tere .. went couple of weeks ago and found some fine specks but nothing substantial .. would be keen to head back out and have another look around if your up for a joint effort ? I know a couple of the popular tourist panning spots but they get hammered, im more interested in finding some harder to get to places

Hi Tony,

The place to go is called Ewingar Creek. Known for its smoky quartz. There are heaps of posts on the web so google away. The only decent place to camp there is the Ewingar Forest Camp at the top of the hill. It will be busy during holiday times so be prepared to share. If you google "ewingar forest fossicking" you will get the state forest map that is very useful and shows areas you are allowed to fossick. Just be aware that some of the 4wd tracks aren't correct. Don't forget to get your fossicking permit too - https://firewood.sf.nsw.gov.au/FossickMain.aspx

Cheers

Have you done any research on the area ?

A quick google search comes up with this sight .

Mentions the Wilderness lodge has gold panning as an activity, those running this activity at the lodge might also have info on local places to fossick.
i have a sister that lives on a property about 40ks out of Casino on the raod to Kyogle and Im pretty sure when I have been up there to visit, the locals spoke about gold strikes in and around the clarence river and the creeks.
Just be aware the local Aboriginal land councils administer a lot of tribal lands up that way, so always check with the local tourist information centres on areas that off limits.

G'day, old post but Id thought I give a comment T. I too asked Sam and his wife for permission but got the straight up no go away attitude. He said it was a liability issue as he has had persons bring dogs that have killed his live stock, people burning themselves from drunken antics with the camp fire. Etc etc. Anyways I just did a day trip in a nearby state forest. Found some great gullies but found no targets not even trash. I've spoken to another property owner and have picked up permission to hunt the gullies nearby with my minelab eureka. Luke if you ever read this post and wish to tee up a day trip I'm up Mt tambo and always keen to do a trek Wether it be panning or detecting.
Drop me a message.
Sam

I know this is an old post, but just wondering how you got on? I am about to visit the same area and camp at Urbenville for a night or two. There is state forest near the camp, but all my research tells me it is not gold or gem bearing and one must go to tooloom, Paddys Flat, Drake etc. I'm still gonna give Urbenville and surrounds a go though.

Hi
Recently returned to Ballina NSW in Nthn Rivers area and have been investigating Drake area for gold fossicking. Been to a few places and keen to get out there more. Wondering if there is any interest in a prospecting & camping club (more social than official) to fossick around Drake (gold), Inverell (sapphires) and other nearby locations. Experienced gained at Upper Shoalhaven River, Turon River, Hill End, Windeyer, Hargraves, Gulgong and around Oberon. Safety in numbers, sharing experiences plus some social fun is my objective.

Hi Peter, long time since I been down that way, but would like to have another scout around. Didn't have a detector last time I was there, just used gold pan and screens.

Hi Mike
I am finding it hard to find a spot there to find more than an occasional "fly speck" of colour. Tried a few places on the Clarence - gold is tiny and rare in the crevices. River crossing at Paddys Flat is full of gibbers that fill the valley with few collection points. Tried up the bank under a few rocks but no joy that area. I guess I just have to experiment and try all the places I can access.

Regards

My old man and I have had a go at girard state forest got alot of .22 casings which was still pretty cool, some hot rocks brought them home for practice and the old man got a nice pyrite speci. Awesome country out there really nice drive from Cleveland.
