The garmin 64ST comes preloaded with Garmin TOPO Lite Australia & New Zealand Topo Maps, which I think you will find is only 40m contours, but nice at only $99 stand alone.

I have, on my garmin the latest Garmin FULL TOPO Australia NZ DVD V5 which has much more detail and iscontoured every 10 metres, but stand alone a hefty $199.

An excellent map, btw, but I have never noticed any mine sites, unless I have missed something?

NSW State Forests have an exclusion zone set up for hunters that works on Magellan explorist models as well as Google Earth + smartphones with GPS. I think you have to have it on a working GPS device to hunt? http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/hunting/education-and-training-for-hunters/gps-download-guides

There must be a way of setting it up on others? Be a matter of some smarter than me cookie putting the info/waypoints into the correct format & enabling alerts within a set distance?
Be good if NSW State Forests done this for their Fossicking Areas too seeing as though they have exclusion zones within & some border onto National Park, SCA etc.

I have a Meridian Color GPS and it plays havock with my ZED.

Google Earth works fine without the internet. Just need to load the required area with the internet, ie just zoom in all over the area you need saved onto your computer. Then you can go without the internet. A huge area can be saved into cache to use at any one time and its like feeding into a 'pipe'; as cache fills up with the latest viewing while online - old cache is being dumped to make way. The default is 2gb found in /tools/options/cache.

Yeah I have the GPS 76 and the Garmin street pilot III for the truck and all my phones and tablets have a GPS in them,

on ebay and found newly listed gps as new second hand for $70 with post,bargain,

Yeah I've got the Magellan 501, it's terrible, gone back to maps and a orienteering compass, set up using the map, note the vehicle location on the map, walk out only make square changes of directions etc. turn around and come home works every time and no interference.

I've tried using my Garmin Zumo that I use on my bike to try navigate through the bush on foot. When covered by thick bush, I seems to loose reception, once I get to a clearing all is well again.

Are handheld GPS units better in thick bush or will they have the same problem as my Zumo ?

I would assume that blocking the line of sight access to the amount of available satellites would affect any GPS out there.

All you need is one that makes a waypoint / you car and arrow back to it. maps are ok but not really needed on a gps. My has maps I like it but without maps would be ok

Garmin Etrex 10 is ok cheaper end with base maps $140 It do a good job finding your way home. I have the Garmin Etrex 20 model you can load your own maps on it I use some free map sets or more detailed maps.


Magellan eXplorist 110 @ $120 would find your way back to your car no problems as well no need for fancy features if you only want to find your way home

If your phone got a gps in it work ok as well

Thanks for the quick reply Colmaca my phone does have a gps but I always leave it in the car My last gps was an etrex 10 liked it but it couldn't handle being run over
by my car, must of been a dud, so I think the Etrex 20 may be the go thanks for the advice

Like anything you need to look at what is the need and then the "want".

The needs would be something like -
Know your position
Mark a home point
As you know all GPS's do this or should!
I have an eTrx 10 as well for a spare if someone comes out with me and it does the job perfectly. Picked up of Gumtree for $90 brand spanking new used once. I do recommend these as they are light, take AA batteries, the AA can be rechargable and you can charge the unit via USB and also add way points via Basecamp.
They are super easy to use.

Cons - No references or visuals on the screen. You could be 1k away from a road and it will not show it, only the major highways.

The wants are where the differences come into it.
As above I wanted something that gave me the ability to add maps and more data. I found a very good condition GPSMAP62 at Cash Converters and got that for $90 also "bargain"...

I loaded Shonky Maps onto it and now I have a fairly good base map with roads, POI etc... For a free map they are pretty good. I will update to a better TOPO but for the moment it is way better than the eTrex10 map so improved as well. It also has a larger screen. Otherwise very similar. Good viewing in Daylight and also takes AA batteries that can be recharged in the unit.

Cons - No extra storage for larger files, interface a bit clunky using buttons (touch Screen may be better)

You need to work out what your wants are and then tick off the list. The website listed below can give you a pick list to work with in the main search.

Be careful using a mobile as a GPS. I have the Samsung Galaxy, although it has its own GPS antenna, it's after all a phone. It also asks to use the network to augment the accuracy. Which is bloody useless if you don't have a signal.

I tend to think that if you want a specific function, then buy a specific device. They do the function as well as anything can, whereas a multi function generally does them all to an extent, but rarely as well.

I use the Garmin E20 and only to mark the cars position and any finds. In between I turn it off. My first set of AA batteries lasted 18 months. GPS or location research is better done at home on the laptop or tablet before the trip....
