Night detecting with the Explorer SE Pro

Hit a real rough looking junky park tonight, seemed to be an endless number of car parts dumped there for some reason, lots of good signals from them too unfortunately (the pictured door lock surround was from the previous hunt ).

On the bright side, I shifted location detecting under some trees on a roadside verge, and picked up a 1957 sixpence, and two lovely Brittania pennies, an Edward 1903 and Victoria 1896 (oh so close to the sorely needed 1895 coin). Once again the pennies cleaned up very well, and Victoria penny in particular has some great detail on it (barely any patina). I think roadside verges and footpaths are one of those areas often neglected by detectorists, but really do offer good finds dropped by pedestrians back in the day.

Another interesting hunt tonight, lots of tarpaulin ringlets to keep me busy - damned things :| There was actually a real good variety of finds, at the top of the photo are the remains of an old oil lamp, followed by a chunk of lead, an ornate decorative pin, a plaque off an old petrol pump, Acme Thunder whistle (made in England), and a variety of coins/silver.

Very first coin target of the night was a sweet 1857 half penny, followed by 1921 & 1947 pennies, 1951 half penny, 1948 Rams head shilling,1951 sixpence, and a cool little sterling silver shield with Birmingham hallmarks. Not many spendables, though just enough to keep the targets flowing.

Interesting to note the hole punched in the top of the 1857 penny, just between the "E" and "I". It doesn't go all the way through, so not sure what the story is with that.

Thanks guys, I might head back to the same locality once my XP Deus rocks up. There is a very good chance that some tasty coins are being masked on the Explorer, so it will be very interesting to do a comparison. Ended up choosing the 11" coil on the Deus, as it seems to unmask just as well as the 9" coil, with the added advantage of improved depth and coverage.

Very interested, as my next one will be the deus, unless something better appears

That hole may have been to locate the coin the right way up, if it was set in something at some time in it's life.

It was a real struggle to find anything of interest tonight, with a distinct lack of "honey holes" to visit in close proximity to home. Ended up cleaning a park of its junk and BB's (only a portion shown in the photo), before eventually getting a couple of decent hits near a tree base. The only two pre-decs for this hunt - a 1952 Roo, and a 1946 Florin which made it all worthwhile.

Sounds like a hard night. The florin would makeup for it a little.

Ever thought about trying your luck down at Pt Mac? Not just the beach, but a few historical type sites around the town that aren't protected. I don't know if the customs house has ever been detected? It is heritage listed I'm pretty sure, but is owned privately by a guy I went to school with, Grant. While the building itself, is protected, I don't know that the big front yard where the sea mine is located is? Might be worth a look. Also there was a cpl of old pubs down there that burnt down years ago. 1 was on the cnr across from the deli on Sea parade, and the other was on a now vacant block next to the bay servo as ya come into town.

Thanks for the info Chewy, I think you will find most of those heritage listed properties are covered for not only the building, but usually also for the block of land as well, regardless of ownership. You can go on the SA Heritage places site, and it will show the coverage map for any particular site. I guess it is also to prevent the owner developing the property in a way that will detract from the historical value of the site, or at least not developed without stringent building guidelines.

Our club was looking to have a detect down that way, but we currently have a few other areas that we are looking to gain permissions on. Unfortunately I missed their last coin detecting trip, though the only coin found was a threepence, so may not have missed much.

Will most likely require prior permission to detect those empty blocks, just need to track down the owners to be 100% sure.

Went out with the missus yesterday for a bit of a recon & detect trip, but got to the location and realised I had left all the pinpointers and digging gear at home, at least it was a nice drive.
