I have viewed the maps on GeoVic and searched the internet for a clear answer and I am coming up with no clear idea.
First I am totally new to this whole thing (well da) I plan on using a very cheap metal detector.
All I want to know is where can I use it. I am sure I can use it at the beach but from there I am stuck. I know not to jump a fence and invade someones land but what about forests. Places on the side of the road?
Please some help would be great. I don't want know where you fossick just a general area would be nice without feeling I am doing something illegal.

this whole Exploration Licence (EL)
Prospecting Licence (PL)
Petroleum Production Licence (PPL)
Work Authority (WA)
Retention Licence (RL)
Petroleum Retention Lease (PRL)
Mining Licence (MIN)
Petroleum Exploration Permit (PEP)
totally confesses me. does it mean those areas you cant enter and everything else not owned is free game or the other way around.

I would very much appreciate your time and help with this.

Kindest regards

Metal detecting is permitted in most State Forests, many Reserves & private property with landholder's consent. For beaches & parks etc. you could play it by ear or enquire with the local council.
If land is under an Exploration Lease in Victoria you can still detect there without the leaseholders permission as long as you can legally access the land otherwise i.e. public land, private property permission etc. All other Mining Leases require the permission of the leaseholder.
Here's some info that might help:

Also might be worth joining up with a local metal detecting club & nearest branch of PMAV

No worries - good luck with the new hobby.
If you have any dramas just ask. There's always someone to steer you in the right direction.
If you're going to detect the goldfields John Tully & Doug Stone maps can provide some good starting points for a chosen area.
Members here often have camps/get togethers so keep an eye out for one that might suit. Good way to pick up info & make it more social if you're interested in that side.
