We have a new edition to the family, in the form of a little cavoodle pup that the kids have named Buddy. The only problem is that the crappy old gates out the back of the shop to the busy road outside, have a gap underneath just waiting for a puppy to slip under.

With mostly scrap, an old portable arc welder, and some welding rods way past their prime, I spent Saturday knocking up something that blocks the dog from getting under the gates, but moves out of the way when the bolt is lifted and the gates opened for vans and cars to go in and out. It would benefit from a coat of paint, but then it would last longer than the old gates.

Top marks for Ingenuity! You must have gone to the same welding school as me. wiley

Yes, it is a bit cocky poo. I found an old pack of 2.5 GP's that the flux crumbled off as it heated which made it hard. It wasn't worth going to B's and buying a new pack though, as they would be ten years old before the next time I used them too :) The welding unit is a 15amp, but we only have 10amp at the shop. I always preferred a MIG anyway, but haven't had access to one for over 20 years.

Clever approach, goes to show there's many ways to fix a problem, when I seen the first picture I thought more gravel or a nice concrete trip hazard would do.

I figured he'd still scratch away the gravel if it wasn't old and compacted. The guy we lease the building from is a tightwad, who won't spend anything on maintaining his building. I'm ok with that as I'm happy to fix things myself mostly, and if I need material for a job, it gives me greater pleasure if I can cut off some pieces of his old rat hole and use them to fix somewhere else.
