I live just outside Canberra and like most newbies have been watching a heap of videos and would love to give it a try someday. I don't any equipment or any experience and ideally would like to take my 11yo daughter with me to have a crack.

I am open to all advice and know-how from everyone who would be happy to impart any knowledge!

Welcome to PA, Marty.

All you need to get started is a basic prospecting kit (plastic gold pan, plastic classifier/sieve), trowel, small shovel, some buckets and a little bottle to put your finds in. The prospecting kit should be available at any camping goods or detector store, or online and will serve you well for both gold and gemstones, wherever there's a suitable stream or river.

Oallen Ford is an ever-popular spot, so you've got a good chance of meeting some like-minded fossickers there and maybe picking up some practical prospecting tips. Here's a couple of helpful threads for you:

Thanks for the info grubstake. I have read those threads and some good info there. I guess the best way to start is to just start!
