So I've started on the book on the far right - Ion Idriess: Of Miners and Soldiers.
Fascinating learning about the beginnings of Aussie mining towns like Broken Hill, Cobar, Silverton, White Cliffs, Lightening Ridge, and many others all over this country. Also a great insight into the outback characters of the day.

Oh my god!
Why hadn't I started reading Ion Idriess books sooner.
I've read about his experiences traveling the outback and the early days at Lightening Ridge and other mining towns.
Now I'm reading about his experiences at Gallipoli and North Africa/Palestine in WW1 which were published in his book "The Desert Column".
He quotes mostly from the diaries he kept and it's a blood and guts, no edit journey of the craziness and more importantly, the horror of war.
Like everyone, I've heard the stories, seen the documentaries and films about WW1, but that all seems like kid's tales compared to the diary extracts of Ion Idress. He was renowned for being very observant and a great story teller and it is these observations and story telling abilities that bring to life the real horrors of WW1, by courtesy of his diary extracts.

If you can find a copy of his book "Of Miners and Soldiers" or his WW1 book "The Desert Column" you won't be disappointed.
The Desert Column was re-printed many times. There are various covers. This is just one of those covers -

I read those books couple yrs ago couldn't put it down , if I started reading in the morning it would be dark when it was time to give it break :100: :goldnugget:

Crackheads kinda destroyed it, but Ive had worse to deal with. I went around last week and we figured it out, and rang the plumber and sparkies.

Took out the kitchen and a couple lights and repaired the wall. Shifted the windows, and put in a new entrance door. Fitted external sheeting and new door locks and handles.

Removed fireplace and Sanded floor. Flat pack for kitchen was picked up yesterday morn and we knocked off a 6 last night. Had 1 too many as one of the cubes wont fit through the bedroom door

Into proper prepaint today while he fixed the flue to re-site the wood heater and fitted off new window winders.

I should do this for a living. Be done in 2 weeks at this pace. :power: :fire:

Week off and nowhere to go so making a serious start on the food forest. Ripped an old bed apart, sieved to 10mm to get all the garbage out, lined the bed with weed mat then going to relocate some asparagus.
1587455195_old-bed.jpg

Job done, just have to fit the watering system, going for drip this time. Chucked a tomato in as well just to kick things off, Black Russian :inlove:

Next the old overgrown Asparagus bed, rip everything out, sieve and rebuild with one of the Bunnings high beds.

The old crowns were enormous and hung in tenaciously
1587455579_old-crown.jpg

Then the joy of the rebuild with the new system, the outer zincalume frame slid together easily, no screws, bolts nothing so nothing to catch ones fingers on when digging later, first the primary fill, old logs and broken down leaf litter, followed by lawn compost, Maggies reconed all their Christmases had come at once! :)

Been caught like that too silver i will never learn

You don't know of a good nut grass killer that is good for the environment ,beside's diesel and round up mixed together

Zero will do it sand surfer, but.... nut grass has up to 12 nuts attached in succession and Zero will only kill up to nut 3 or 4.... so... it is very important to do a followup spray (or touch with a brush if in amongst plants) 2 or 3 times more as soon as the next nut puts up grass.
This needs to be done to make sure there is no energy for making new nuts at all. :Y:
and in time the last nuts will die too ;) ;)

Hey Dihusky, we have found it good to put some old poly pipe or garden hose slit from end to end and placed over the edge of the zincalume.

We used some tech screws to hold it in place.

Cheers

One of the reasons we chose this system from Bunnings is the top edge is rolled over by the manufacturer, when we opened the box, all long edges on both sides of the sheets are rolled over so no sharp edged. The ends of the sheets have been punched so they can't come out of the corner forms, it's a very simple, safe and well thought out system. Brand is 'The Organic Garden Co'

The product we use is 'SedgeHammer' very effective and specifically designed for Nut Grass, you can spray on lawns and won't effect the grass only the Nut Grass.

Bunnings stock it, but not on the shelves you have to ask for it.

Hey Dihusky,
Great looking setup you have going there :Y:
I think your feathered friend may be a Pied Butcherbird, rather than a Maggie ;)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pied_butcherbird

Looking forward to seeing the finished product, producing some produce :perfect:

You're absolutely right, actually a family of Butcherbirds, had junior around for most of the day, think he got too fat to fly with all the food around, Dad was watching from the papaya as mum was feeding up on huge beetle grubs. our wildlife :)

Thanks silver, and Dihsuski i will check it out later

I can't remember the name of the stuff we used years ago ,been going through the old spray diaries ,it must have been before those days of the spray diaries, as i have found no mention of nut grass spraying yet :|

What ever it was it is more than likely been removed from the market

GU Nissan Patrol owners.
Anyone who has a Patrol that doesn't have an airbag above glovebox, here is a project to keep you occupied.
"Chicken" on the Nissan Patrol Forum put these photos up under GU Second GloveBox back in 2009
Can guarantee when completed, a few minor shaves on the plastic dash and it does fit like a glove.
Use 3mm MDF, and when complete I fibreglassed all the joins.
*** Last photo shows mine completed with an added centre latch and home made hinges, I fitted to keep it closed on rough tracks/roads and drawer liner cloth.
Very handy for storing bits & pieces when we are on the road.

Close to complete, 3 new beds and a full relocation and rebuild of the compost bays in the old chook yard. 1 week of good solid work :)
1587801854_3-beds.jpg

My little mate thought there was something in my sandals and was not about to give up, turned out there was a lizard hiding underneath
1587801955_it-in-there.jpg

Recycled the sleepers from the old Asparagus bed to start the bays.
1587802246_compost_bays.jpg

Finished by planting some climbing beans, peas, various picking salad greens and marigolds, so next couple of weeks should start seeing some autumn activity :)
