Newish to Gold detecting and panning. Recently did a trip to Bingara Nsw and went to 3 Creek gold mine and Paul was very knowledgeable and got us wanting more. Our next trip we are going down to Vic for xmas and wanted to try our luck around Ballarat area. Any places we should try. Either detecting or panning.

If you'll be around Ballarat this summer, forget about panning unless you take your own water with you, as the few creeks in the area are likely to be dry.

Thanks for the heads up. We would normally take our bucket load and pan back at camp.
Steve Barnham has produced a panning guide for the Ballarat area and also a prospecting guide for the nearby Creswick area. There are other mappings available as well. They would be readily available from detector shops close to the areas such as Days in Ballarat.
They would cost around $20 -$25. I always found that if you are going to spend thousands on gear, vehicles, campers, traveling, accommodation costs etc a few dollars on knowledge is a good investment.
