Sorry to hear that mate . Guesse it a bigger prob than the coal mines admitt . Am still wanting to know if there is anything out there that can help . Went to the Amonzon (Peru) afew years ago and was blown away by what the Sharmins could do .

it's a huge problem mate, there is no cure the lung scare tissue forms over the coal/rock dust . I have been dealing with it now for 12 months I don't have black lung but I have COPD which is industral emphsema the symptoms are the same caused by coal dust

Trying to get hold of somebody that did not cure Emphsema but it has not got worste in the last 6 years using natural herbs . I very interested cos got it myself

The best thing you can do for chjonic lung problems is to try to keep the large muscles in your body (especially your leg muscles) well toned. Exercise believe it or not is the best thing for emphysema. I have it too and pretty bad, recently I finished a pulmonary rehab course, it mainly consisted of exercise bike and treadmill plus a few weights. If you can get enrolled into pulmonary rehab it can and does make a difference.

The fitter your big muscles are the less oxygen they need and the better you will feel.

Sorry to hear your mates crook Fred, hope he can get some relief somehow.

I think there are going to be a lot more lung problems that will come to light in the future due to mining, it's an insideous problem, you only know you have lung problems when they get bad. A bit of a silent killer.

Thanks .I will look into it myself . Good advice . How come my doctor has not brought it up .
Meanwhile any suggestions for me mate

Most doctors might not know about it, ask your doc about it though. If there is no local program then walking is a really good way to start helping yourself, squats, exercise bike or pushbike too, you need to get air moving and do a good cardio workout but don't over do it. You'll find you get more stamina as the weeks go by and you won't get puffed out as easilly.

If he's too crook to exercise Fred I don't really have any advice, wish I did though.

Heatho is correct that passive breathing exercises is the way to go....It creates growth of new stem cells in lungs which will help you.

I hope you're able to get help you need.

Cheers Arthur

Sorry to hear about your mate Old Fred :( .. These sorts of Diseases MUST be eradicated out of the Workforce. But unfortunately they are making a Comeback ..... 4 years ago I had a visit to my Dr re breathing issues... After numerous Tests,. Preliminary diagnosis was Asbestosis. 8.( .. I have documented history of being exposed to asbestos in 1989... After a very worrying time and a lot more tests, the conclusion was COPD. :| .. Glad they were correct in a way cause im still here.... Never mind the $3.5m payout I say. 8.( .... Treatment, Exercise, Diet play a big part in my life now and I can still Fossick.. for now...yay..... During this period my Dr has been the Best ....Advise, Support ect... and most of all The AMAA...Asbestosis and Mesothelioma Association .... These people have a good website to assist people with these nasty 'Conditions'...They also have some great info on Black Lung.... another site I found good info was the Asbestosis Related Disease Support Society of Qld. You should have one in Your State.. Good info on Asbestos and Related Issues like Black Lung..... The CFMEU and the Plumbers Union were very helpful pointing me in the right direction for Information as well.... At least they are good for something I say... Another place is the Lung Foundation in your State...

Your Mate NEEDS to contact a Good Law firm like Maurice Blackburn Lawyers.... They look after all of these type of Disease Claims and have all the latest info and people to Assist your Mate.... You might say Why? contact lawyers.... Its not for your Mate, Old Fred, but His Family that has to Deal with All of this... And After.... They even Flew a Lawyer up from Sydney to interview me at my Home....Good People I say.. And I Recommend them....

Having a GOOD medical support team(Dr, Lung Specialist Ect)and Finding an Asbestos Doctor or at least one that knows this stuff plays a very important part in the Way you Cope/Deal with these issues.. The above Societies/Associations can help find one in your area... Please seek legal advise ASAP.. :|

This might be worth some further reading to:
https://www.pivotalhealth.info/black-lung/
It's pretty costly so I'd be inclined to research the ingredients etc. prior to purchasing but it may be worth a look.
Also in the US they have black lung clinics to help with the management of black lung. They may be able to help you with some info on methods etc. We seem to concentrate on prevention here rather than aftercare as it hasn't emerged as an issue again until recently.
Heatho's pulmonary rehab course may be pretty well the same or similar to some of what's involved with the black lung clinics? Would be a good start regardless.
Hopefully Coal Services Health etc. will expedite some help & ongoing management for those affected.

Very interesting reading mbasko.... USA and the UK both have some interesting Treatments/Research going on at the moment.... No Offence to People from the UK...but I worked with a few in the late 90s-2000s.... If Dust from brick-saws, sweeping the floor and good old Fiberglass Lagging/Rockwool Insulation was done on-site, they would run a mile to get away from these airborne Nasties... Laughed at them then. ..... Now I know why.. :(
My pulmonary rehab course was run by QLD Health.... I would say the Health Dept in each state would run the same thing.....
