Have a look here to find public land http://mapshare.maps.vic.gov.au/MapShareVic/index.html?viewer=MapShareVic.PublicSite&locale=en-AU

Have a look here http://earthresources.vic.gov.au/ea...-prospecting-and-fossicking/land-access-rules

And here for parks which have exemptions where you can prospect in http://parkweb.vic.gov.au/visit/popular-activities/fossicking

Then to top it off, cross reference that area with geovic to see if it's likely to be gold bearing http://er-info.dpi.vic.gov.au/sd_weave/anonymous.html

Here is a bloody ripper of a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0jwCaAa1ck&t=616s

Been scoping out the town diggings in Ararat.
Around the area of Camp lead, black lead, and down to Lushington Lead.
Question?

Does anyone get there pantyes in a knot if you do a bit of panning in local reserves/ creeks.

Looks like the road builders have been using old mine waste as road base, getting mixed samples.
Ive have seen this in Kalgoorlie when I was panning the local creeks and flood water runoffs, where I would pick up a good feed after a local rain event , but not this bad.
Any ideas to get around this?

Lastly has anyone got any tips for panning in the Ararat area.
Not after a El Dorado, just a quick feed.

BA

North of one tree lookout would that be in state forest. also, can you detect in Ararat hills regional park.

G'day newhunter welcome to PA. There's definitely detectable ground around Ararat. Jump on the Earth Resources website and search the area's you want to detect.

It's in your interest and everyone's to know which parks you are allowed to prospect in. Some parks allow others don't, it's all available on the Earth Resources website. Please research and know where you can and can't. Doing the research gives you the website/tool to show evidence if challenged, I've never been challenged but others have from time to time.

Check out the PMAV, Prospector's and Miners Association of Victoria and join up. If you attend a meeting or field days you will receive tuition and information from people who are actively involved in keeping the ground we have available and their valued experience.

The main thing is do it right and enjoy yourself 🍻

thanks for the info, I'm off to Ararat tomorrow for a few days. still not sure about Ararat regional park, been on Geovic and had a look around but cant see if you can or cant detect there

I'll be there for a few days onwards. Nothing on the earth resources site about where you can fossick in Ararat regional park.
I've rung Parks Vic days ago and got told the ranger would get back to me but I'm still waiting.
All I could find on the net was this old publication dated 2010. That does say fossicking is permitted but that was years ago.
Suppose I can just do the tourist thing and go sightseeing.
