How sad it is that we've got to this point where we can't trust the average guy to make a fair deal. If you've got $15k cleared funds into your account and you still have the van I can't see the problem. Surely you'll have the remainder in cleared funds before the van leaves. I can understand the guy being too busy to make two trips. He's willing to risk $15k for you to hold it until he gets there. As long as I had good photos and felt comfortable with the seller that's just the type of deal I'd do if I was in his shoes.

MB if your good for a 15K deposit on the other side of the country site unseen on a 50K purchase your holding the folding to the point you'd be silly imo. Fair coment for a person willing to down 15K as a deposit but the original post didn't ring true for an honest transaction. If the bloke really wanted it to the point he'd of paid the 15k he would of accepted as an agreement Trash's offer of part payment regarding travel expenses. Put simply if you or I were to be the purchaser and the offer Trash made wasn't taken up as an agreement as an interim or final part of the deal I'd say it's a scam or waste of time.

Im with MoneyBox on this one.

Some people are hard up for time. Some people with more money than sense will buy many things sight unseen.

15 k in the bank is just that. Once there it is there. Make it very clear that he can deposit 15k, when collecting you will meet him at such and such a bank, he can withdraw cash in front of you, hand cash to you and you hand van keys and paperwork to him. If he baulks at that...then he can take his business elsewhere.

He very well may be dodgy but he might also be a legit buyer of your van who just does things differently to most ;)

My neighbour had his Matilda for sale a few months back, we are in Perth.

He Got a call from Sydney, same deal, large transfer deposit with balance transfer at pick up. No inspection and some guy would fly over and drive it back to Sydney.

Two weeks later it happened, I was shocked :Y:

Only problem is he keeps getting toll fines. :N:

Cheers
David

I think if this guy is 69 then he's not your average scammer. The guy is more likely to be more trusting than he should be in today's market.

You could ask for some photo ID eg; Drivers license

Interest thread this one, having recently just purchased a second hand vehicle and having trawled through numerous car yards it became very evident that many motor vehicles are now bought sight unseen by the purchaser, research via the Internet, contact the dealer and get more pics sent for inspection, make the purchase, transfer funds and the car/4wd is shipped to their door. One specialist 4wd dealer said over 40% of his sales are done via the net.
Having said that we purchased privately and were very happy with how the transaction went, probably helped by the fact our son knew their daughter, something we didn't know until after we had agreed to purchase and paid a deposit. ( Small world) :)

Be very wary. A friend of mine tried to sell his van through Gumtree and he had two scammers call him in the first couple of days, he was very excited about the sale at first until the warning bells started to ring. It seems vans a a major target for them.

I like how groupthink works, it only takes one person to say he thinks it's a scam and others jump in agree, it's like a feeding frenzy, I admit that sometimes I too have doubts about the legitimacy of a deal that is being offered.

Several weeks ago when a Russian tourist was selling a detector on here and the number of people that immediately called it a scam, based purely on the fact he had a Russian email address.

This caravan deal maybe a scam but on the other hand it may well be a totally legitimate deal. If he agrees to a direct deposit into your account I don't see how he can reverse the transaction or otherwise scam you, the remainder of the payment via bank cheque and the van doesn't leave your possession till the money clears into your account.

For me, I'd take the money, make sure you have cleared funds, complete the necessary paperwork upon his arrival, take a copy of his ID and you're $50k better off

I'm in Perth and that's a fair way south of here, but Moneybox is from Capel, about 30km south of Bunbury. :)

Still havent seen the van it was picked up for me and I flew over and drove the perentie back.
Very happy with both.

WA is in another galaxy and sometimes thats just the way you have to do things here.

I looked at maybe getting a perentie after seeing your one, but when I read it only has a 2000kg towing capacity, that was the end of that.

Steve , may I ask how you paid for the items ..?

That offer of $15K upfront seems like bait to me
10% or 5K would have more credibility .

Anyway we will find out if my suspicions were correct .
Just make sure you cover yourself .
