Lost Medals Australia

Heard a conversation on the radio today about a guy who returns Australian medals to the families of the original owner. I thought I would put up a link to his web site as occasionally a forum member finds a medal and would like to return it.

Great site. If anyone ever found a WW2 medal at Auburn Primary School in Melbourne, it might be my grandfather's ... bloody schoolkids (me).

Thanks ramjet, I have some enquiries in with the national archive people for a couple of dog tags I found recently. I might give this bloke a call if I hit a dead end.

I am currently going through the local RSL, and their resident medal specialist to try and repatriate my WW1 victory medal with any existing relatives. Though you never quite know the history on why the medals were lost, or even possibly discarded by relatives or immediate family, possibly over resentment to the war.

All I know is that the private in question was a machine gunner who died in France, and the father was delivered his remaining belongings, and was consequently presented with the son's Victory medal. After his death, the sister then recieved the medal, and may have either lost it or discarded it in a local park, about 300m away from a war memorial. So it will be interesting to see what further info they can find on any existing family, hopefully resulting in the return of the medal - if they actually want it.

Gary, who is the administrator of the site worked at the Australian War Memorial for a few years. He also runs guided tours of overseas war sites like Gallipoli and the Kokoda trail. His knowledge of Australian and British war involvement is mind boggling.

Well worth a look if you find anything military.
