From your pics, these beautiful birds seem to have an affinity for places where their otherwise excellent scrub/grassland camouflage is completely useless - boat decks and campgrounds!

Nj I believe they are also called the Widow Bird as it screams for a lost one. We have a family of them in the reserve and they scream at all times in the night. Scary at 2-3am.
We don't oftern see them during the day, but see the results of their diggings around old trees. Yesterday afternoon was different, a group of 4 at a rotting stump but by the time I got the camera the group had started moving.

That is Dad minding the chicks until maturity.
Mum lays and sits on eggs until hatched then she buggers off leaving Dad responsible.
It's actually the emu father that does ALL of the nesting, hatching and chick-raising. The mother just lays the eggs near his chosen nesting spot and he rakes them into a cluster and resumes brooding.

We spent this afternoon putting together a diorama of the Spinifex Hopping Mouse for the Cue Heritage Centre. It's one of the few species of Hopping Mouse not yet extinct. This little fellow was found dehydrated in the old bank building in the centre of Cue.
Zebra Finches decided to nest in an old coffee tin that I had cut a hole in hoping a native bird liked the realestate.
Stopped at Cocklebiddy road house today , where they have a pair of Wedged Tail eagles.
They really are magnificent birds..

It's nice to get to see these creatures but what a terrible life for a bird that should be souring freely above our great country.

A few hours later we stopped just past the SA border and I was able to watch what I think may have been an Eagle souring over the coastal cliffs ... I will try and down load the video and share it here..

I think its an Eagle .. but what ever it is , its effortlessly gliding on the thermals and looks magnificent..

I don't know the circumstances of those two, but I'd suspect they've suffered lasting wing injuries along the highway and have been rehabbed but cannot be released into the wild.
Unfortunately, the highway is the graveyard for many eagles, which are attracted to the never-ending carrion supply from kangaroo and emu roadkill. With their massive wingspan, eagles can't quickly fly off when a vehicle approaches and even if they aren't killed on impact, the blast of wind (especially from the huge trucks), will often knock them out of the air, leaving them broken and bleeding by the roadside, to die a slow death in the heat and dust.
