I've been detecting on NSW beaches for a couple of years now but always wondered whether or not council's permission is required to do so.
I have been approached by surf life savers once or twice but this is usually to ask if I found anything and have a quick chat.
The way I see it I'm doing council a favor anyway by taking away junk metal, nails, hair pins and all that. I also hand in any keys that I find.
Also is it true that detecting is banned on some Australian beaches?
