Just purchased the above as a serious replacement for my old sovereign xs, others have said if i can master the dials on the sovereign the 4500 should be no problem.
I have just now assembled with evo coil and all I'm getting is an a variable like ambulance siren that is not adjustable with threshold and not detecting-just making a racket.
Can anybody give me the basic settings for the switches with this coil or do i have to go into the lcd display to tune/adjust for the evo coil?
I wont be able to get back to the shop of purchase to ask questions till later in the week.
Total noob with a new toy-Richard

Where are you trying to test it--if inside a building, get out and go to a park away from all electrical and pipes.

Out in the front yard on the grass that i know is clean

Wifi and all sorts will interfere with it.
Flick the switch to cancel to quieten it down if you're near civilization

I strongly suggest you read the manual first mate.
Ive read it back and forth since i purchased it on Tuesday, the manual doesnt cover the evo coil, and doing the basic set up on back page of book is giving the current result.

If you're anywhere in suburbia you can pretty much only run it with a DD coil in cancel mode to get it stable and run properly, even then you'll probably have to turn the sensitity right down. Any electrical interference like power lines, wifi, other electrical stuff will make it output the exact sounds you describe. As the other guys mentioned too you can run the mono coil in cancel too but it won't be very sensitive at all. GPX detectors are pretty much only for the bush with a mono coil attached.

Just swapped coils for no difference, can only adjust threshold in cancel but then it doesnt detect any thing in cancel, im going for a drive to try my luck elsewhere, ironically the old soverign works great in my yard, but gotta move with the technology to hopefully get the reward

The GPX4500 isn't a real good replacement for the Sovereign XS which is primarily a coin & relic detector. The GPX4500 is pretty much a specialist gold prospecting detector. If you're still searching for coins & relics + wanted something that will work in an urban/suburban environment then you possibly should have looked at the CTX3030 as a serious replacement for the Sovereign XS?

HH I was thinking along the same lines regarding genuine hopefully it is. Trying to set up at home is destined to fail unless you've taken up quarters with madtuna :p. As others are saying get out of town and in the gold fields then try to set it up. Just use factory presets and don't change a thing until you've got some time under your belt.

Purchased from an authorised minelab seller with a shop in Brisbane.
Went out near Dayboro Cemetry as there are no powerlines etc and the machine is still doing the same thing, sounds like an ambulance even when doing factory reset and auto tune.
I will take it back to the shop as i hope im missing something obvious, but by doing exactly as the manual states im not winning at the moment.
I purchased this as i want to search for gold, not coins etc as the soverign does so well

Unfortunately you are still reasonably close to suburbia. Looking at street view on Google maps, there are 11KV power lines running right in front of the cemetery. Plus any houses with wifi signals, solar panels etc will cause issues for some distance. Also check your phone wasnt too close to detector.

You really need to get out bush to do testing on any modern PI detector.

Mine only wails like that when I get interference on whatever channel I am using. A quick manual tune to a quieter channel is my solution.

Does the wailing increase or decrease if you lift the coil into the air or point it in a specific direction? or is it a constant volume?

Hi Mate, you will never be able to set and run successfully anywhere near power.
The only way you can do setup is away from any power.
What you are hearing is a feature not a fault. Mine does exactly the same. I too tried at home. I can laugh now but then I thought I purchased a dud.

Cheers

The siren noise doesnt appear to relate to movement, maybe this is normal and ive got to get further away, would hate to drive for 2hrs and it be the same, ive got to learn it.
it made no difference passing the detector over my steel watch[could this be discrimination at work?] and wouldnt detect lead[i have no gold]

Did you get a training day included if not make enquiries and do one. And yes you should consider driving the 2 hours, out bush means just that not just any open spaces close by.
