I thought I might share a story about gold detecting and Minelab ... I participated in a Hit107 radio promotion last week that started from the recent 4 kilo nugget found in Victoria

Rather than rattle off the story here it is:

My son (SA Bogan who is also a member here) signed up for this but couldn't make it due to work commitments so I went in his place and brought my daughter to keep me company ... I heard the detectors were supplied from Minelab so I was keen to give their SDC a run to see if I liked it. Met at the station and boarded the bus at 930am...

As the morning unfolded and after speaking to the other participants I worked out most had no experience detecting and it was about having fun so I reset my expectations once I realised it wasn't a serious session. We travelled up to Jupiters in the Adelaide Hills which is about the only goldfield around here and is well visited. When we got there, Minelab was there with a range of their detectors and six experts to assist the punters ... A nice range from the GPZ and SDC to the 705 ....

We broke down into groups of two ... Chose our detector ( I chose the SDC) and were pointed in the direction of where they planted 10 nuggets (in plastic specimen containers) and around 100 coins near the enterance to a few old gold shafts. Off I went .... Found 5 $1 coins and a bit of junk I should have dug but they were screaming - a bullet, some wire, foil. Etc... But no nugget.

A few of the others including Amos found a nugget along with a couple of he planted coins. I enjoyed using the SDC and getting some instruction from Minelab along with some commentary about how it was developed, which was interesting stuff. The Minelab guys were very accommodating and we chatted about all things Minelab which I enjoyed very much.

At the end of the session we gathered for the wash up .... Amos passed his Presidency to me and gave me a new 705 Dual Pack along with a show bag of Minelab goodies that everyone received.

A great day, and a fantastic display from Minelab who treated us like VIPs and supported the hobby to a bus load of newbies. I thought "how great is that" our Aussie company can take the time for the locals and give us a taste of their equipment and hobby.
Thanks to Cat and Amos Hit107 for organising this event ... It was a blast!

I was invited to attend that but had pre-booked training on the same day. I trained Amos's uncle earlier this year, but didn't know he was until recently. Small world

That was a really great idea, hopefully, there will be more of it.

Mike.
