Does anyone know if there is anything to fossick in the Meryla state forest ? Its on the state forest fossicking map as an open to fossicking area , although that doesnt mean theres treasure ! I saw a website advertising a getaway homestead there that states fossicking as one of their activities !

Regards to all

Hi Everyone

my partner and I are new to prospecting and for christmas bought ourselves some fancy gold detectors which now the days are getting cooler would like to start venturing out and use them, we live in Canberra so as they will be weekend trecks we are wonder if anyone know where we can go to test out our machines. We would also like to know how we go about getting a licence to cover the entire NSW incase we decide to venture further afield.

I seem to be going around in circles with websites and leaving messages for call backs...getting frustrating.

Thanks for that . I didnt know about Minview. What a resource ! I wont have to ask area questions anymore .

Thanks again

Hi 2213

I'd recommend that you go on a weekend tour or training day. There is a thread on the forum about tour operators people would recommend.

A training day to get to know your detectors would be a good start, and some of the specialist retailers offer them.

From Canberra, perhaps Tuena would be the closest location where nuggety gold can be found, but don't expect people to give away their secrets!

The other option is of course Hill End and surrounding districts and Ophir.

As per "fancy gold detectors", what did you buy, PI or VLF? That will impact on your chances of finding gold.

No expert but I can find some reference to small amounts of alluvial gold being found in Bundanoon Creek & Meryla Creek (possibly Sandy Creek?) both feeders of the Kangaroo River & part of the Shoalhaven catchment so could be possible. You never know if you never go.

Thanks guys

Was just looking for somewhere closer to Sydney for day trips , this weekend , that wont be 8 degrees top temperature , like central tablelands will be ! That minview is bloody amazing . Wish I hadda know about it years ago . Would have saved me much blind adventuring !

Probably better to start your own thread so people can see & answer you question easier.
In NSW there is no one licence, permit, miners right etc. to cover all areas.
The closest would be a NSW State Forest Fossicking permit available for $27.50 per year & gives you a huge range of NSW State Forest areas to prospect/fossick in.

There are some NSW State Forest close to Canberra that do contain gold bearing areas but I'm not familiar with the area so maybe someone from Canberra will comment.
You can apply for a permit in NSW National Parks areas but generally speaking NSW National Parks are off limits to fossickers.

Other than that any other publically accessible Crown Land is available to prospect/fossick without a permit/licence/miners right required. While not 100% accurate & some show Crown Land under lease (same access requirements as private land) Doug Stone's maps on specific areas can help in getting an idea of areas to be able to start out from. Once you're more familiar with areas & access you can branch out from there.
Get to know the NSW Fossicking Guidelines available here:
https://www.resourcesandenergy.nsw.gov.au/miners-and-explorers/fossicking-in-nsw
This forum also has a heap of resources/info on specific areas & members scattered around the state with local knowledge to help get you started (not x Mark's the spot :D )
