Big rocks..

Last few times I've been out, near old workings there are always big piles of yellow/orange rocks slightly away from the workings. What are these/why are they there?

Did the workings look like they had been sluiced?
I detect in the GT to. I've seen piles of rocks in sluiced areas. What the old timers did was pile the big rocks up rather than send them down a sluice. Could be it.
I'm sure others will have some thoughts.
