2017 detector finds

So today went over to Cowra and bought a caravan which is smaller than the one we currently have. We traded that one in and the one we bought will be swapped over next week. On the way back we were asked by a sweet little old lady if we could have a swing around her back garden at Eugowra. She had lost her wedding ring whilst doing some gardening and despite searching for it for the last six months did not find it. Only after half an hour I detected a big woop and seconds later found the ring. What was strange was the detector was pulsing today rather than a continuous tone. I have a Minelab Eureka gold - and I am sorry not able to post a picture of the ring I found due to not being that tech savvy. Today was the best find I have made with the exception of the tin I found in Tasmania which was my first ever find. I am guessing that will always be my best find.

Thanks RJ, considering the crap start to the year, I never thought I would in my wildest dreams come across such a site, especially one that is common knowledge. The guy that put me onto that site is going to keep tight lipped from now on. :lol:

I still have another video or two to post, unfortunately I have to go back and re-edit due to the length, plus my tablet crashed when uploading to you tube after 2 hours.

Here's a pretty amazing pic of all the buttons/dog tags I have found so far from the old school site - no wonder my legs were like jelly. Around 140 at last count, with probably more to come.

You could probably go over the same ground many times over and still find targets, some are trickier to find due to masking. Just a matter of having the correct gear for the job, being thorough, and having a lot of patience. Others have been detecting the site whilst I have been there.

22 coins have been found so far, earliest from 1860's through to late 1960's. Most of them were King Edward VII coins, and a few young/old Victorian coins. Only two silvers so far. The odd one out was the 1880 US Indian Head penny.

As far as I know the site is dated to the late 1800's.

The lack of silvers has me thinking that someone else prior to me has already cherry picked the easier high conductors.

Man it was wet today, though not wet enough to stop me from trying out the new Deus HF coil at a supposed hammered spot. Same location as the previous detect with the Racer 2 and small coil at an old church site - https://www.prospectingaustralia.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=321222#p321222

Ended up running the HOT program on 14kHz, discrimination on 10, and reactivity set on 4 for what is a very contaminated patch of ground, literally several nails for every hole dug making pinpointing a real headache.

Considering I was only there for a couple of hours, this coil really impressed at picking out targets from the junk, even the larger targets are mostly masked, I only heard a snippet of a tone from what ended up being a large copper holder, possibly for salt & pepper.

Yet more SA dog tags were found - 1934-35, 1909-10 & 1896-97, and my first ever silver and Victorian coin for this site, a worn 1899 Veilhead threepence.

Two interesting buttons included a Naval anchor two piece, and an "Aberdeen Knitted" button with a thistle pictured in the centre.

All up very impresed so far with limited time on this coil, quite frankly I'm surprised at how many targets came to light. Unfortunately my phone went flat during the hunt, so only managed a couple of pics, not to mention the fact that I was absolutely filthy and wet by the time I finished.

Think I need a bath and some dry clothes!

When you get layers of what are literally hundreds of nails in the ground, I think you will find most detectors will struggle to be able to "see" past them, it really is that bad here. Even with the Deus on the third fastest setting it was struggling to pull targets, moving up to the fourth fastest setting seemed to make all the difference. Even then the tones you get from non-ferrous targets are heavily influenced by the iron, so pretty much a case of digging every repeatable target.

Down n dirty Gp, but lifting out some great finds, maybe the high iron content (nails etc)in the soil has taken all the reactivity upon itself leaving the rest looking well preserved. :Y:

Bit of both, the physical size of the coil helped in not picking up too many targets at the one time, and also runnning high reactivity meant electronically it could "see" inbetween the nails to pick out some masked targets. Running some discrimination just gave the ears a bit of a rest, and made it a bit easier pick up on the good tones.

You probably do just as good with the older 9" coil.

....and so a second day at the church using the HF coil, still pulling targets including more silver - 1947 florin and a minty 1879 Victorian threepence. Neither coin was an obvious high tone silver squeaker on the Deus, instead very warbly mix of tones that you would never pick for a coin, hence why I am digging anything resembling a non-ferrous target.

The 1936 half penny was found quite close to florin, didn't even pick up on that when I first hit the florin, despite only being two feet away. Same deal with two more dog tags, neither obvious high conductors from surface (1898-99, 1896-97). The large button was found in the same hole as the last dog tag, also picked up yet another naval themed anchor button.

The silver coloured lid is probably a small ladies compact - labelled "Kissproof, USA.

I must say the past two days has been a real eye opener, not only on how badly targets can be masked, but also on the need to slow my detecting right down to a crawl if wanting to pick up on all of these targets, even with reactivity swt high (recovery speed).
