Yep, the best ground conditions I have come across, much better than Adelaide. Easy digging, little or no oxidation on finds, and low mineralisation for optimum depth.

Went out for a quick relic hunt at a spot we have hammered in the past, though not so much using small coils. Thought it would be interesting to see what was still around, this time with Mrs Goldpick's G2 and NEL Sharpshooter coil (and later the Racer). The G2 does having a liking for rusty iron objects at depth, which is fine with me as some iron finds can be of interest, and large iron can be avoided via pinpointing. Some of the iron targets turned out to be buckles and assorted saddlery items, the door knob was giving off a non-ferrous tone one way, and iron the other which proved to be spot on being made up of both metals.
The first target was actually the fob watch cover, quite a tricky target to isolate being on edge in the hole, and with iron both sides. Not sure what the silver plate clip is from, it does have some patterns marked on the centre scroll. The last target of the day was a button found with the Racer on two tones, and at a stupid depth for such a small item (see photo).

Felt it was probably a good time to give the relics a miss today, instead preferring to hit an abandoned cricket ground from a post WW2 rural settlement. First couple of hours on the Deus turned up nothing but a few 20c coins and BB's, in fact things were looking so bad I was nearly going ot head home. The missus gave up and sat in the car reading the paper whilst I continued to persist, eventually landing a 1948 threepence, followed by a near sunbaker 1957 shilling.
Heading back around the opposite side of the oval, I inadvertently hit on a pretty crappy high conductor tome that was worth having a look at, surprisingly a 1952 florin sitting on edge (explains the less than ideal tone). Ran the Deus back over the hole - another deep sketchy tone being a 1946 sixpence. Within the next few metres two more florins surfaced from 1956 & 1957 - all coins sitting on edge which explains why they may have been overlooked in the past. Gridded the immediate area up, though nothing else surfaced.
Got to love the condition of the silvers, the very sandy well drained soil leaves very little oxidation. The shilling came with the most oxidation of the coins being so close to the surface.
Still happy with those silvers considering I nearly left with no predecs.

The hunt could have easily gone the other way if I had chosen to take off, though I have always learnt that some of the best finds are made when you have patience and continue to persist. I think about 6 hours is my record for not finding a single decent find in the one session, ended up finding an early 1800's threepence in the last five minutes. :lol:

Here's a pretty amazing pic of all the buttons/dog tags I have found so far from the old school site - no wonder my legs were like jelly. Around 140 at last count, with probably more to come.

Lol, the local tailor must have made a killing on buttons back then - got to dig them though, could easily be a gold coin instead.
