I Have the ResQLink as well. Battery runs out this year (5yr). Don't know replacement cost. Paid $290, but came with a good first aid kit and other useful things. Never had to use it, which is a good thing of course. Which ever one you get, make sure it tracks you down to a few metres.

I thought it was illegal for anybody other than the manufacturer's authorised agent to tamper with or modify PLB/EPIRB communication devices? Otherwise we'd all just buy new batteries online and do it ourselves - I'm pretty handy with a screwdriver.

My understanding: Only the ones that need certification kept current - eg Marine and Aviation.

Les, just make sure you get a PLB with a 10 year battery life and manufactured within last few months. (Not old stock).

Then register with AMSA, and lodge updates on their site when you go to a remote area for a while ie general location(s) you are going toand when.

Then protect it and put it in your detector backpack and tell buddies you have one in your kit.
Cheers RDD
