G,day All Thought this may interest some of You,
On a family detecting trip a few years ago to a Mates farm ,,half way between Wollombi and Kullnura We detected a site of a long gone settlers hut ,no evidence remained except a small flat chiseled into the hillside of this secluded gully,
The Find ....Copper One Penny Token.... Minted by Heaton & Sons Birmingham England Circ 1858 AD issued to James Campbell General Stores Morpeth NSW {34mm DIA with the name of issuer James Campbell General Stores Morpeth on one side and on the other side a representation of Justice holding Scales spilling fruit with a sailing ship in back ground, These tokens were made because of a shortage of coinage in the Colony , the cost of the token was inccured by the advertiser after Agreement with the Crown.}
Also found on the day was a normal Half Penny ,from a later date. Both coins were remarkably shallow ,within 150mm to 200mm from the surface considering the time they were lost.
The inscriptions on this particular token are Very Faint due to mineralisation of the soil but can be seen with a jewellers loupe or maglamp . There were also Half Penny Tokens produced for Campbells plus a Silver Three Pence Token that was Undated supposedly !!!!! Both pics are taken with a standard penny on the right .
