Stephen Barnham's guide, Gold Detecting for Novices recommends always searching "nuggety ground". But how do you know where the nuggety ground is? Or, is it generally considered to be the case that the whole of the Golden Triangle in Victoria is nuggety ground?

He's probably referring to areas that historically have been known nugget producing areas, recorded as such. Which doesn't mean you cant find them outside of those known areas but id guess as its written for novices he says that as a starting point. Something for novices to cut their teeth on, a push start.

It sounds trite but nuggety ground is exactly what it sounds like, ground with nuggets in it. Historic records like JD3 says, or modern patches if you can get someone to show you them (ask nicely and bring cans :playful: ).
When you get out there dig a hole and see what the wash actually looks like, then look for that elsewhere.
