OK, so it's fibre optic, still doesn't answer the question, why cable and not satellite?
And why is everyone hell bent on "down/up" speed?

Have you tried filling a swimming pool from a dripping tap? Sat has too many cons like speed and bandwidth, bad weather dropouts .... I havent looked at the price but I'm pretty sure if your not in a remote area (the bush) it's pretty exy.

Witnessed first hand two Caterpillar dozers in tandem ripping a trench 150+km's from the goldfields Hwy through to Laverton (population 1200) laying the NBN cable.
This is just a miniscule example of the cost blow out.
Surely this money would have been better spent piping the abundant water from the NW to Southern cities and towns?

The satellites in orbit at the present are considered unlikely to be able to give internet access to all those so far in the bush that fibre optic cannot be run, there are more of them than the satellite system can cope with. They can only cope with so many "transactions", so we would need to build and "orbit" probably hundreds more to cope with the nationwide demand, and this would cost billions more.
The satellite feed you are talking about for TV is only supplying maybe 100 feeds and no "upload" i.e. you can only receive.

Apparently we have the worst Internet supply and speed in the world, talking to a guy the other week who worked in Korea and they're talking about 400 plus Mbps. Now that's fast aye?

Dont be so negative please

That's a big part of what screwed it up for the nation to begin with.... People who couldn't see the benefits for themselves stomped their feet and threw tantrums and spread misinformation.

Companies are still using couriers and snail mail to send blueprints designs documents ect. Wasting what is to them precious time and profit while the the competition in other countries are able click a button and upload the same information in seconds.

Doctors, Surgeons are using super fast broadband connections to help in complicated surgeries by getting the specialist to supervise and help remotely in real time.... Even in some cases the specialist is able to remotely control robotic instruments to assist in surgeries.

Home entertainment with super fast broadband has also been proven to reduce piracy of movies television shows ect.

That's just a tiny fraction of the benefits from NBN I'm sure others can think of more.

So to the people who can't see the benefits for themselves...... Try thinking about others for a change instead.

I also play online computer games in my down time and want the fastest download and upload speed and lowest ping possible.

And there lays the problem of todays children, which is slowly being recognised. Many don't know how to hold a pencil let alone have a conversation face to face.
The internet with out doubt has many advantages but where is it heading?

Don't know how fast this phone works, but when I put up a hotspot, the phone, three tablets and a laptop all run internet with no problems at all straight through the phones internet connection ,... I hope when we sign up for NBN that we get similar to that at the least. NBN is here and available, just need to do it now ! :D

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying.
But if there is any problem with today's children..... It won't be because of the internet.... It's because of bad parenting.

And not knowing how to hold a pencil?
So I guess you think the telephone ruined the country because it reduced the use of letter writing and face to face conversation? :/

All I see is technology progressing and people either refusing to adapt and trying to drag everyone down with them..... Or people adapting and moving forward.

A funny conversation.
When I was in late teens early 20's a gold pan, eski, swag, rifle and fishing gear lived permanently in the back. Any chance I could I would get amongst it.
Holidays were spent fishing, prospecting or on shooting trips.
At work on a friday around the crib table the 20 or even 30 yr olds discuss sitting in front of a playstation all weekend.
And into work they come bleary eyed and not worth a pinch of goatsh!t to do what they get paid for.

So are you saying anyone who likes to relax or think in a different way to you.... Isn't worth a pinch of goat shite?

How did this conversation get from the "NBN being great progress for the country" to "people playing playstation in there own downtime not being worth a pinch of shite"?

Bas*#rds, I get 0.9Mbps download at the very best of times, and I'm in metro Melbourne. Then I have to contend with kids downloading videos.
We're also on the NBN plan for ??.
Bas#*rds! GRRR!

Bloody coincidence, i just mentioned speed of NBN connection and we lost our Optus Cable Broadband including home phone as well as the Optus dongle i run the laptop on "shiite" itself. Reported at 09 am today fixed 1400 not bad repair time these days but the Optus shop is shut till tuesday so that i can get a new dongle/SIM.
I tell you what it's been nice and quiet all day today. Now the wifes on the phone and i'm doing this!!!!
Cheers Jaros
:p

Ive been online shooting zombies most of the day....
Now im google camp sites take the kiddies camping packing the pan.
Down loaded walking track maps...checked weather....its a nice arvo i might do some gardening before cooking dinner... then watch some online movies....

Sorry about my veering off course from the topic NBN.
Mankind recently sent a space craft to Mars and kept in constant contact without trailing a fibre optic. (Joking of course.)
My original query is about not understanding why we are wasting huge amounts of money on a system that will be obsolete within years?
What percentage of households today have a land line, we only use ours for internet and incoming calls?

I can see both sides as every now and then I will waste a arvo on the young blokes x box . But it can be bloody hard to motivate the kids to get outside and ditch there screens for a while without having to end up in a massive blue. Have also seen the effects of young blokes coming to work with there brains out of gear from being up all night playing but probly better than them being on the piss as we used to do.

Wouldnt want to be on the internet up there lol, only take about 30-40 mins to open a page!

With present technology you would need hundreds of satelites just for Australias internet ......... lets face it, until they come up with a better and cheaper alternative than WiFiber, fiber optic really is the best and only way to go.

A land line for positional tracking does not lie ! ( just a small statement ). ;)

NBN, humpf! - 2 years to go and only an ADSL1 line "we're not upgrading the exchange 'cos the NBN is coming..."

Someone will invent a newer version of information transfer which will be able to be carried by either wireless or fibre. Look what ADSL is doing on the plain old copper cable.
Jaros :p
