It is a dream of most coin detectors to find a sovereign or half sovereign . What about a holy dollar ? Have you found one yet ??? Where is the best place to look for one ? Answer , in the ground . Thanks !

Did read of a guy whose father collected them in the 1950's . He had 10 so the story goes .

Knew an orthopedic surgeon that used a copper coin as a washer on his daily driver , a 1930 3 lt . Bentley .....

It was on the water pump .

Thought I found a dump once but unfortunately it was just a small token :argh:

I've come across a few dumps over the years.
Some I'd never go back too, some I've lived in, some I've taken badges off, some I've fossicked and some with corn. Thank god the ones I fossicked only had slag

May be true.
There are approx 300 of these coins still existing and in good nick would bring about 220,000+AUD today. The Dumps approx 50,000

Went out for a detect last night looking for a matching pair, ended up finding a big lead relic.

dollar and dump pictured with a $2 coin for size comparison thought a copy set could act like a magnet for attracting the real thing one day

Nice copy set Wally... whats it made of?
Thanks for the pic, now I know what they look like. :p :p :money:

Not sure of the metal, possibly pewter or toy tin. Dollar is a lot bigger than I expected, they are quite thick coins, so would not miss them if you were lucky enough to have walked over one

Is that a classical holey dollar? My understanding was that they were punched out of Spanish reals - and not very well punched

The one I posted was the one in circulation in Canada. It appears the one used here is identical to
Wally69s image (which he notes is a copy)

Thought I read somewhere that they were all struck from a load of coins diverted from the americas and there were different year mintages in the chest, so the base coins (Spanish Reales) can be different. Would be easy to have taken out a plug and make counterfeits in 1816 although if the base silver weight was the value, there would not have been much point beyond being able to give someone some change, which was the sole purpose of the NSW mint run, so plausible.

Got mine off gumtree, will get a 1930 placeholder penny one day too.
