Hi guys, I'm calling on all your collective knowledge here if I could please. Way back when I was in my early 20's I got the detecting bug, went out and bought a detector and had an absolute ball. Never got rich from it but had a lot of fun. Then came marriage, kids, work, etc, and I never seemed to have the time anymore.
Now I'm older and living with my late-20's son, and the bug has hit again. Both my son and I are divorced and happily single so there's nothing stopping us getting out for a day, or even a few days. My question is this.....
We are based in Gladstone, Queensland, and I'd like to hear from anyone in regard to areas that might be worth swinging a detector over within an hour or two drive of home. My son is eager to learn all I know about detecting, fossicking and panning. I have an X-Terra 705 twin coil and wanted to start him out with a good area for coins and relics and progress to gold prospecting later on. From the research I've done of the area there are a few goldfields I'd like to try, especially around the Many Peaks - Kalpower area. I am trying to pinpoint the location of a couple of old ghost towns in that area but can't find much about them in print. One was 6 to 8 k's from Many Peaks and was called Gareebin or something like that.
I would really appreciate any help here guys, and if anyone knows where I can purchase mining maps of this area from the late 1800's please let me know :)

Okay, thanks to you all for taking the time to read this, hope to hear from you soon.
Cheers and happy digging!

HI I live in Victoria so I cannot help you much .This might be worth a try contact any prospecting clubs that may be in your area or ask the nearest detector shop as they should point you in the right direction regards john :)

mate any new info is worth while, $55 is not much to pout in for some research if it helps find gold and relics :) mmmm gold

I am in Victoria but a quick internet search is usually a starting point:

Queensland Historical Atlas - online and free. See http://www.qhatlas.com.au/ an excellent site that I wish we had for Victoria.

Google 'old queensland gold maps' in google images - you will get some nice little surprises here.

Try the National Library of Australia 'trove' website - a lot of info online and free. http://trove.nla.gov.au/
For example: type in 'kalpower and gold'- I found a couple of interesting items. You can serach for maps, newspaper articles, free online books etc.

Try your State library. See http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/ search facility is very good.

Try bonzle database - free. http://www.bonzle.com/c/a here is Kalpower. You can use this D/B to zoom in, narrow searches etc

Try google earth - you will need to search this forum for google earth mine overlays. Just a word of warning - the mine overlay D/B is large and can slow google earth down quite considerably.

Visit your local library - we are lucky to have the Gold Research Centre at Bendigo and also excellent collections at Ballarat. 99% of their old info is not online and they are 'goldmines'of info - you may get the same. The internet can only get you so far.

Commence a research plan ASAP and work from there. Good luck.
