I am a retired motor mechanic, been living in Tamworth for 25 years, hobbies being metal work / blacksmithing and prospecting. Snakes are bad this year, would suggest nee high rubber boots and a sharp eye. Also would suggest anyone metal detecting in pine forests wear safety flouro vests, a friend of mine was shot at in the pine forests at Nundle/Hanging Rock by deer hunters (they shoot at anything that moves), he was out looking for antlers to make knife handles. Luck was on his side and a lesson was learnt.
