Gaining Permissions

Hi
I am wondering how people go about gaining permissions for sites on private property. I’ve found some nice historic houses in my local area that look abandoned or not used.
How do you source the property owner? Do you ever send a letter/talk to the owners of neighbouring properties to get insight?

If there is a site on property, do you door knock or leave a letter behind with your contact?
