As a newby at cutting and cabbing, about 5 years ago, I decided to start with a Oberon found biggish black spinel before sacrificing some of my better finds of Blues, Parties and nice red Zircons.
So I started to cab it and to my surprise, a star was born. Yep, a beautiful 6 point black star sapphire appeared right before my eyes. Just under 1/2 Carat cut. My GF loved it so I made it into a ring for her and then she lost it. So no photo to show. Then I lost her and not going there about those photo's. So anyhow... Just to let you know, Not all Black Jacks are spinel. Some have a silvery black which could be hematite Iron Stone, Some Spinel but some maybe Black Sapphire. Some even Black Star Sapphire. So it maybe a good idea to pick them up for further investigation before flipping them back in the creek as I used to do.
