BIRTHSTONES

THE pleasant idea of having a birthstone for each month of the year originated in Old Testament days. The following stones are now credited with conferring good fortune, according to the month of birth:

January: The garnet, symbol of power and grace, first cousin to the ruby, but not as costly.

February: The amethyst, symbol of love and preservation. Bred in the purple and one of nature's natural gemstones.

March: The aquamarine, credited With the power of happiness, shares the month of March with the bloodstone, symbol of courage and wisdom.

April: The diamond, symbol of purity, is the principal gem for people born in April, but for those who cannot afford the price of this aristocrat of stones, the zircon is suggested as a suitable alternative. The zircon is the symbol of brilliance.

May: The rich, green emerald, symbol of immortality, is the stone for May, with, the less costly green tourmaline .as the suggested alternative.

June: Is the month of the .pearl, which is associated with purity and innocence. The moonstone is the alternative stone.

July: The ruby represents the Australian mid winter month and is the stone of charity and dignity. Its glorious red makes it one of the most beautiful of all stones. The red carnelian is the substitute stone.

August: The peridot for the daughters and the sardonyx for the sons of August is the theory of the birthstone supporters who claim that the peridot stands for health and the sardonyx represents courage and cheerfulness.

September: Symbol of truth, virtue and strength, the sapphire is the birthstone for September.

October: The opal, Australia's own gem, is the birthstone, for October and represents hope, innocence and purity.

November: Fertility, friend ship and fidelity are the theoretical qualities of November's
gem, the rich, golden yellow topaz. Other varieties of topaz are blue, pink, and colourless.

December: The oldest gemstone known to man, the turquoise, symbol of prosperity, represents the last month of the year.
