Mates father has one for sale, never owned one, any body recommend the model?
Any issues I should be aware of?

Ill do my own research too, but knowing you blokes like your utes and are technically minded maybe you can relate any relevant experiences.

They were pretty hard on clutches when they first came out. (Around 2005) Some blokes went through 3 or 4. I think some of that came down to the extra power from the previous models. Aside from that they are very good utes mate. Just keep an eye on your cv boots. Thats about all the parts we ever sold for them. Typical of Toyota-very reliable and well built.
 
Are you talking 4WD KUN26R ?

2005 - 2013 has the 125 kW diesel , I recommend getting rid of the OEM fuel filter and fit a fuel manager or Donaldson kit with water trap.

I put a 30 micron and 5 micron filter on mine , you have to pull out the sensor from the old filter or put a resister in its place otherwise you will get a warning light on the dashboard.
The standard filters are rubbish and can cause damage to the injectors.

Another issue that era can have is leaking seals under the injectors , Toyota brought out upgraded seals but diesel specialists will have them by the boxful and they are cheap to replace.

There were hundreds of posts on NewHilux forum about injector failures from 2005 onwards which Toyota Australia turned their back on while Toyota dealerships in other countries came up and addressed under warranty , but here in Oz the dealers said there aint no problem youre delusional or you had dirty fuel which caused many mining companies to raise their finger at Toyota and purchase thousands of Mercedes and Iveko light trucks or amaroks , ford rangers and Nissan patrols etc to replace Hilux fleets.

There are aftermarket fixes if you hunt around, usually related to modifying the injector nozzle or using updated injectors from older models.

When you test drive this one , check for clunky gear shifts between first and second which indicates the synchro on its way out

The synchros on the third and fourth gear shaft can also strip off and you can drive the vehicle normally in every other gear but third and fourth will have no drive.

Do a search on the Toyota website and see if the vehicle needs an airbag upgrade , there is also an upgrade required on a spiral cable on the steering column which Toyota do for free.

D4D engines can have problems with oily soot buildup inside the EGR and intake manifolds which is a job you plan for a full day at home or pay someone to do it , there might be chemical cleaners these days that will claim to do it , I didnt find one yet . Best way is to get the gasket kit and strip it down to do it properly , and you might have to do it every 5 - 10 years.

Thats starters , if I think of other issues I will add them.

Most 4WD have problems , but despite the issues above VW Amarok and Hilux is still probably the best in that class size .

Ford ranger and Mazda BT50 is virtually the same vehicle and both have engine issues as do Nissan navara , later model ford ranger I know nothing about , they might have fixed weak points.

Yeah Thanks mate. I was steering away from the diesel variants and probably should have stated that upfront, but your information is good and something Ive discussed with my brother several times about his particular issue. If memory serves his is a 2010 sr5.

Was shady of Toyota to bypass any recall or fix of an issue that was clearly their fault and after seeing my brothers experience first hand I had, up until now, not considered one.

Having now discussed in detail with my mates dad Ive found its a workmate with a 5 speed, 2x4. I was chasing another work vehicle (preferred a van) so my mate messaged asking if I was interested. Ill go have a look over the weekend if the buyer he had coming today passed it over.

The dmax I had as a work supplied vehicle was a ripper, but I wasn't looking to go down the ute path until this popped up.

Diesel engines last longer than petrol.

What dont you like about Hilux diesel ?

With the exception of a VW amarok the hilux is still more reliable than other 4WD innthat weight class.

If those are too small for you then you would go to Nissan Patrol or Landcruiser , both of which are as tough as nails.

Don't discount the PJ Ranger :Y: one of the best work vehicles I've owned and would happily buy another if the history said it was well looked after.

@ OldGT mate if it's a van as you're preferred vehicle don't waste your time looking at utes :|

Did your Ranger do occasional light 4WD work or did you thrash the pants off it with every hardship imaginable ?

Some 4WD dont show any faults until they get pushed a little ..... or a lot but its nice to hear that you had a good experience with yours.

What year was it ?
 
08 PJ to say did I push it I'd say I worked it hard with respect to towing real hard. 4 wheel driving moderately hard, it was bog stock and serviced me very well. Had I thrashed it through rough 4 wheel driving I'm sure I would have spent as much on repairs as I would expect with any make of vehicle no matter what extras are on them. The old adage of you bend you spend doesn't necessarily relate to accidents when it comes to 4 wheel driving which it sounds like you understand. They are a tough vehicle no doubt about it.
 
Deiesel engines dont last longer than petrol if used like most people do Use them as shopping trollies they are designed to be driven long distances

If you look at Nissan Navaras for sale , why do so many of them say ;

"engine replaced at 110,000 km"

"engine replaced at 97,000 km"

"engine replaced at 128,000 km"

?

Hilux diesels may give 330,000 - 400,000 km before maintenance issues increase in frequency and all you need to do is service and change timing belts at correct intervals until then.
 
You can buy mine, 09 dual cab, 245,000 oil changed every 5000klm.
Still going strong, same motor, no issues. :Y:
Dual row timing chain, not rubbish belts to worry about.
Don't pay Toyota Tax. :money:
 
Go the toyota :power: they hold their value better than any other brand for good reasons, plus the extra coupla grand up front is returned when you resell.
I think the next model was 2009 to 2015 and they are great to drive and comfortable.
 
Theres no resale in my world with work vehicles...after all Im pretty tough on cars but usually buy them and drive them until they are getting to expected end of life (and a bit further).

Odometers on my 4 utes, 455k, 501k, 485, 389 all petrols.

The Territory has been a good reliable run but with the $ needing to be spent on it, extra work space needed and instant asset incentives it makes sense to make a purchase sometime this year. Without the incentive Id just plow on with the Territory for at least another 100k.

The real trouble I find is it appears vehicles just arent as good across the board as they were, and Id like something I can use for both as personal and business use. Be easy to just have 2 but my driveway wont accommodate it, nor will Mrs GT stand for it, Ive been down that road before :argh:

Appreciating all your thoughts guys, can be a bit of a hot topic. Going to have a look and a drive today and go from there.

Simple fix to the cv boots. You can have a double kit put on the cv boots. Have done it on my prado. As for the clutch once you put a heavy duty in it will be fine. :perfect:
