Minelab X-terra 705 General Tips, Advice, Questions

Hey Guys, just trying my old Xterra 705 for purely coin hunting. I have it set up to exclude all ferrous targets. My question is when I find a positive target and go to pinpoint mode I often get a lot of negative ids, indicating ferrous junk. I just realised the pinpointer mode reverts to " All...

    Mountain Bike?

Would be a pushy. Was thinking of taking just a pan, my fold up shovel and maybe my very light fluid bed sluice that can fit in a back back.

    Pine plantation

I have detected through plantations. Where I live there are tracks through them that people go through to camp and fish or access the river all the time. Very rarely do I see a sign saying no access. Just use common sense and fill any holes you dig. They were often planted to reclaim land that...

    Reef or old alluvial workings?

Hello all, I've found this spot in the north east of Victoria near where I live. The area was full of reef mines and according to old maps right in the vicinity of where I am. I've put a clip up on YouTube so you can see the spot. The area is very big and full of red mineralized dirt that goes...

    why is it so?

I live in the area you are prospecting and came across a spot that was very similar. Pulled two grams of gold and all of it within two feet of the surface. At the time I thought the gold I was getting may have washed down from an a pile of old alluvial wash.

Anyone still target clay for gold ?

Where I dig, the best gold is usually sitting on top of a layor of orange clay. You must puddle it first or risk losing good gold

    Long time lurker

G'day all, long time lurker who hopes to become more active on the forum. I live in the Northeast of Victoria on an old gold field. Love to pan for gold and fish for trout on the beautiful local creeks. Would like to learn more about hard rock mining too.

    Road works exposing Quartz

Gold was mined where the main street of Rutherglen now stands. I'm sure road workers must have uncovered some over the years.

Hi Guys, I found this large stone. Not sure if it is just smokey quartz or something else. If anyone can identify it, that would be great.

    Puddling?

Thanks for the advice, everyone. The only thing that concerns me is the practicality of separating the clay from everything else in the bucket.

    Digging a gravel bed

Hi everone, I mostly pan crevices, tree roots and potholes etc, but would like to try some of the gravel beds on my local creeks. Im going to start on a stretch where the bedrock is not too far down. I have a couple of questions. Firstly should I disregard all material until a foot or so from...

    Puddling?

Hi guys, I,m doing a fair bit of panning in Northeast Vic and usually pick up a fair bit of clay in the gravel. It goes straight from the bucket to classifyer and pan with everything else without much thought. I,m thinking I could be losing gold. Is it sufficient to stir the concentrates or is...
