    Sapphire and ruby are just names given to different variants of corundum but since you have been getting sapphires in that region then I would say its probably a sapphire or a spinel (found with sapphires) it definitely looks like one. Give it a scratch with some quartz and see if its harder

    Even though I initially thought it was a black sapphire I do agree with Atomrat here about the possibility of it being spinel. I have seen many sapphires with Depends where you found it. If it's around New england then yeah i suppose it could be as there are a few obsidian outcrops around that...

    Amazing find :) Just a note though, some of these specimens sell for more than they would for the gold in them. Particularly if its an impressive piece so if you stumble upon a really good sample or specimen maybe of museum or gallery quality than hold on to it! Generally economically viable...

    Hey guys, the second picture looks like a bit of Pyrite, Chalcopyrite and Pyrrhotite. Pyrrhotite is an iron sulfide as well and has that typical metallic brown colour to it. It's usually found with chalcopyrite. It's extremely hard to tell with the second photo however that dark purple...
