    Suggestions where to go?

Hotrob - i use a car charger for the Minelab battery sometimes. If you're driving around a bit you can get some decent charge in to them. Only about $35 on eBay.

    Suggestions where to go?

I was in the inglewood area a couple of weeks ago and DSE had just completed a controlled burn near kingower a couple of weeks before that. Signs up saying they are doing another in a couple of weeks time (think it said 30 November). Made for some easy swinging with all the undergrowth gone...

    Help with rock identification, please?

I agree with Since1981, looks like a carbonate has moved in via groundwater infiltration and formed on something else later on in its life. The fact it crumbles probably suggests the coating isn't siliceous. Drop some HCl on it and see if it bubbles.

Georeferenced PDF maps (from Geovic or elsewhere)

Hi laney- was referring to a grid lat long in decimal format (i said digital by mistake above), rather than deg min sec format currently in the output. Ticks work best for me. I thought there already was a theme for prospecting or mining but happy for it to be added if not. When you say...

Hi laney- looking fwd to those new layers for sure! does the iPad interface allow for field use showing your location on the map? Suspect this would be problematic for actual use in the field though as most prospecting areas have limited mobile coverage. A great improvement for geovic would be...

Great wooly good to hear. I used my Beaufort maps this week and they were spot on. Spent considerable time digging a hole to about a foot n half for a chunk of lead.? Least i know the detector works for non ferrous targets!

I apologise in advance for this because the next steps can be very frustrating, and only once you get a handle on all the little things that can go wrong will you be able to get this to work repeatedly. I just created three maps for avoca, ampitheatre and beaufort, with a couple of hiccups, but...

I use V3, initially as an anonymous user until i realised there was more functionality as a (free) registered user, like the topo map mentioned earlier. Cheers, Fever

how to create the geo tiff - that's the map file that will eventually be loaded to the Avenza pdf maps app: 1) open Q landkarte GT software 2) Go to Map menu; select Edit / Create Map. 3) Select Convert a TIFF to GeoTIFF by geo referencing it. 4) Pick the correct projection. Step 1 open the...

Georeferenced PDF maps (from Geovic or elsewhere)

OK - so the first step in the process is to create a base map - in pdf format, that will ultimately convert to a tiff image to be georeferenced. For those wanting to use Geovic as the source of the actual pdf map, make sure you have a user account set up (not just utilising the software as an...

Thanks all. Just realised i said 4500, actually only have a 4000. Still learning how to use it, getting familiar with the settings. Have the standard DD coil and nugget finder elliptical mono. Wish i had more time to get out there.. Will get a 2300 one day in the future (once the 4000 has paid...

Sorry - to wet the appetite I thought I would post links to the software packages. The education (and frustration) then follows: Iphone/pad app that I use to import maps to is by avenza and is called PDF Maps - tried to post a link, but forum wont let me because I am a newbie - just google it...

Howdy, Some great topics in this Maps and Resources forum. Some of the topics relate to this so I thought I would post a thread about what I know and have been using for a few months now (as a geologist and newbie prospector with a GPX 4500 and very little gold to show for it....yet). There is...

Hi - first time writer, long time reader! Love the info on these forums, but never got around to joining until now. I am a geologist, studied at Ballarat Uni, and got a taste for the gold back then. Many moons have passed, and haven't licked a mineralised rock for work purposes in quite some...
