Using an AWD in the bush

Hi Diggit, I have an Outback and find it to be very capable as well. I was a bit skeptical because I used to have an 80 Series LandCruiser which went anywhere. Clearly the Outback isn't in that league but it is much more capable than I thought it would be.

    Advice on GPS units

I agree with Maaxxx's comments. The Bushnell Back Track is (comparatively) cheap, tough and easy to carry and perfect for when the car gets out of sight and you just want something to point you in the right direction. It's no more sophisticated than that but it's all I need. I also carry a PLB...

    Ultrasonic Cleaners for Gold Nuggets

Enzymatic detergents can be used in the ultrasonic bath to remove organic stains and compounds and work very well.

    Ultrasonic Cleaners for Gold Nuggets

I use a retired one from work (a dental ultrasonic bath and plain water with a tiny amount of detergent). Works brilliantly to remove debris from nooks and crannies. Takes about 15mins. Leaves it looking 'natural' rather than having that over-cleaned look which I don't like.

    Anvil

Would this be OK? It is certainly adequate for the size of gold I find!

Thanks Flowerpot. She's the best dog ever. She smiles like that all the time.

    Why are you called that?

Sanguine has two meanings; Blood red / bloody and optimistic / hopeful. With gold prospecting I'm always bloody hopeful I'll find something!

    Fricking Toothache

Condor, we may have crossed paths. I was a Dental Officer in the RAAF in the late 80s - early 90s. There seems to be quite a few ex-military members on the forum. Only one day to go Tath! Best of luck.

    Fricking Toothache

I've removed a tooth from a stranger place. A patient came to see me after a nasty trampoline accident. He'd smashed his face into his leg and had fractured his front tooth off to below gum level. He also had a nasty gash on his knee. I found the tooth in his knee and duly extracted it. Some of...

    Gout, Bloody Gout!

I can't answer for the gout but I can comment on the tooth (yes, I'm a dentist). If you did have an infection of the root, the antibiotics have bought you some time but they do not cure the underlying problem. An infection of the root almost always means a dead (or dying) nerve and the...

What Made You Get Into Gold Detecting?

My dad used to take me panning anywhere from Warrandyte up to The Thompson River from a very young age. Just him and me - how good is that! In the early 80s we started using a metal detector which my dad would hire for the weekend and we'd share it. It was a Whites Coinmaster VLF detector and...

    Goodbye Coon

When I was doing officer training in the RAAF in 1991 I was chastised by an instructor for referring to the 'black board'. I was told that it was to be called the 'chalk board'. My instructor was not at all pleased with me when, ironically in the same class, he started using a white board. When...
