Pink Zircon, my favourite stone to cut. Nice stone Wally. BTW, that Square diagram you sent is very nice modified as in, polish all the pavilion angles; comes out a treat in silver zircon.

I need to give it a go Pat, it should suit Hartz Range zircon well due to the blocky nature of the crystals that come from there.

Hi I just received these back from a gem cutter from Port Macquarie 2.6 Topaz 1.7 red Garnet 2.7 blue green sapphire .75 blue green sapphire and a .6 light blue sapphire he still has three more gems to cut for me a teardrop blue sapphire a cab star sapphire and another topaz :gemstone:

A mate of mine recently brought me a bucket load of boulder opal to see if there was anything I could cut out of it. Most of it was just trace colour and potchy stuff but there were a couple of pieces that showed some nice, bit narrow veins of good colour. With a lot of careful slicing and grinding I was able to produce a bunch of great little stones. Some of the time a tiny little slither of colour would open up into a beautiful blob of opal from which a nice stone could be cut. For about a week my mate sat beside me and watched as I carefully unravelled this puzzle and handed him each finished piece directly off the wheel. I was covered in mud, my machine was filthy, but jees it was fun.
Ill throw in quite a few photos because Im not sure if Ill get two shots at cutting another lot like this.
This is one of the stones prepped for action.

Opals are my favourite gemstone...I love em, especially black opal.
My father spent 20 years in Lightning Ridge when he immigrated to Australia in the 60s, he was just a 15 year old kid with big dreams...that he full filled.

Hi guys. New member here. Got the bug recently in the Gemfields in central Queensland fossicking for Sapphires in the last couple of weeks. Found around 30 in total and getting 9 cut. Will update when we get stones back. Cant believe we havent done this before. Already planning our next trip. :gemstone: :gemstone:

This was nuts... but I did it anyway. A jeweller called me and said they had a client who had lost a stone out of a ring, the stone was Peridot, so a quick 'Yes, have some Peridot rough' and I headed to collect the job. Got a message whilst driving, and took a look once I'd parked.... Gulp :(

This was the image I received, sure enough there was a stone missing.

It was *#&*!! tiny, and one of 14 of the little buggers, another 3 of which had fallen out during cleaning.

As one piece of the Peridot rough was cracked, I decided to break it off and use this chip for the job, my scales couldn't read the weight, so less than 0.01ct!

Cut back the edges and super glued it to the smallest dop I had and got to work. Ground a bit of the dop away in the process.

Then came transfer and after 2 hrs soaking in release agent, the old glue wouldn't release, so went to bed expecting the worse, but after 12 hrs, success.

Finally, the smallest stone I have ever cut, 3 steps on the pavillion and 2 on the crown ..... I don't plan on doing a titch again :)

Great job Hu,

A good one to tick off the bucket list......cant wait to see the look on your face when the client asks for all the other stones to be cut and polished like the new one

A bit like winning the lottery $$$$$$$$$$$$$ big pay day :playful:

Nice work DH :perfect: I reckon I would enjoy cutting any stone maybe one day I'll have a crack at it.
