Hi All,

Need advice on the best spots for successful Gold Panning between Geelong and Maryborough, been mostly detecting but I think the wife has got sick of my whinging and bitching about the amount of junk I come home with and bought me the Minelab Gold Pan Pro kit to shut me up.

any advice on the best spots to check out would be greatly appreciated.

Try Creswick, but no water at the moment, the area you are talking about is all pretty dry this time of year.

Good suggestion/advice. :Y:

You could also have a look at this lengthy posting/discussion about Creswick creeks: https://www.prospectingaustralia.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=16349

And if you've got some spare time, wade through these others that also reference the area: https://www.prospectingaustralia.com/forum/search.php?search_id=236388313

Thanks everyone I going to spend this arvo going through videos on how to correctly pan if there is any right or wrong way.

there are efficient ways, inefficient ways and ways that lose a lot of gold. the type of pan youre using will factor into your style too.

you need to make sure youre using enough water and shaking vigourously enough for the materials to be in suspension. a good way to test is as youre stratifying/shaking try to push your finger through the material to touch the bottom of the pan. if you have to force your finger through the material you arent shaking it hard enough or arent using enough water. experiment.

essentially it all comes back to

step 1: shake the heavies to the bottom
step 2: rinse the lights off the top
step 3: see step 1

Also put a cpl of small bits of lead off a sinker about the size of a match-head. If you get your technique right, you will still have all bits left in the pan.... ;)

Someone I spoke to today mentioned Lal Lal as a spot to pan, never heard of the place

If you do find a spot with pools of water be very careful. The old wiggly sticks are out in full force. I learnt the hard way when I was recently bitten by a tiger snake UNDER the water. I'm still recovering :(
