Found this today with the Nokta simplex. Can't seem to find any 1831 shillings with the queen to compare it to for valuation. Any ideas?

Not that I'll be selling. The kids will get this coin one day.

Thanks fella. I'm certain it's 1831 but she wasn't queen until 1837 so that's where the confusion comes from.

Hi Bushpig,
Nice find. I don't believe that it was minted in 1831 no shillings were minted between 1829 - 1834 check the size 23.5mm and weight 5.65grms. It can't be a proof as there wouldn't have been a Queen Victoria die created for the coin as she didn't come to the throne until 1838. Also her image is the second version which came after 1839 were the WW below the neck was removed. More then likely an unrecorded die date error between 1839 and 1863 from then on they put the die number on the coin, Also in 1867 the head changed to young head portrait 3. As to the value to a collector only one that collects error coins would be interested. Personally it tells more of a story if kept by the finder and keeps the line of the provenance to the object.
Hope this helps.
cheers db

Better than finding a 2000 mule hey !

Jeez that to me clearly looks like a 1 , not a 7.

Can see how a 7 could end up looking like a 1 though.

Fingers crossed for you!!...looks bloody nice for 190 years old :perfect: :gemstone:

Hi
I think we need to get the terminology correct to start with a MULE coin is a coin that is struck with a die that belongs to another coin either value or country :-
Such as the 2000 $2 had a 10cent obverse or the 1916 half penny had the Indian obverse. This coin if genuine is a error coin meaning that the engraver put the wrong date on it. First I would check the silver content as well as the size and weight. If those things are correct the only people that can verify this coin are PCGS Paris office or the London mint. Anyone else would still have to send the coin away to be verified.
If it is genuine then it is worth a quite a few dollars. Still a great find.
If you can send me better Hi Res photos I can send them to a dealer that will check the coin for you.
cheers DB

Sorry I forgot to mention that the date is all wrong in as much that the style of 3 never was used until 1873 and the die number was include.

Even as a fake (if that's the case) it's still a bloody ripper find :perfect:  For the minted age it's definitely 18th century :Y: and it's yours :) and maybe the only one in existence :power:
