Found after many days hard work digging for sapphires... found plenty of zircon and nice sapphire in same hole. Although this weighs in at 73.65ct and I'm thinking it's a zircon. Bit stunned as to the size... only been fossicking the past 6 months could anyone please help me identify this beauty?? Cheers damo

Nice find. Get some quartz and a nail and try a scratch test, theres household items around that are at each moths scale of hardness that you can take on trips with you so you can do scratch tests in the field

Nice chunk Damo :p :inlove: :p

A specific gravity test would be a good way to positively identify it, but you could dip in baby oil and look through to some newsprint, a Zircon will have a double refraction effect on one of its sides, ie. you will see the letters twice, slightly offset.

Could be a clear sapphire or topaz, what shape is it in cross section ?

Hey Wally cheers. Yer nice I'd say it would be rectangle in cross section... that's good to know with the double refraction. One thing I noticed at first glance in the sun it sought of changed colour on diff angles. Looked slightly blue then pink also clear... I'm stoked either way zircon, topaz or sapphire. :Y:
