Reedy Creek visit planned

Hi, my wife and I will be on a 3 month road trip from Queensland in May and plan to visit the Eldorado area and perhaps stay a week or so. Besides the other attractions in the area I would like to try my luck with the pan. It will probably be too cold to spend any great length of time in the water and I really just want to get a feel for the area. Do I need a prospecting licence for a few hours play in the creek and how strictly is it enforced. Any other tips for the area would be appreciated
