Hey,
I'm Kari, I'm in my late 20s and I seem to be stuck living in cities for the foreseeable future due to my career and partner. I come from a small property in North Queensland and feel the constant need to go bush and/or drive.
Despite growing up in Townsville, and even working in Charters Towers and Mareeba for 3 months each, I never visited the nearby goldfields! I went through a 'rock' phase as a teenager, with my Dad taking me all over Queensland in an old blue '82 Land Rover during school holidays; Agate Creek, Opalton, Sapphire, Rubyvale, Richmond (fossils), Lark Quarry, and Cobbold Gorge. I got to see inside a working sapphire mine thanks to a friendly Rubyvale local, the original Matilda Centre in Winton, and the Tree of Knowledge in Barcaldine when it was alive. I was a very spoilt kid.

I only considered gold fossicking when I took myself on a road trip (photo) in winter 2018 from Townsville through to rural NSW. I stopped in Nundle (Fossickers Tourist Park) for my first ever pan, and found two dots in the Peel River. On the way back home I stayed a night in Mudgee, and was directed by the local gold shop (Nuggets Down Under) to a small creek where I found my first (and so far only) picker! (photo) A poor little yabby accidentally found my pan, but they were replaced safely (photo). My fingers were frozen, but I've been hooked ever since. Unfortunately work has only ramped up from there, so I find little time for these things. I still can't wrap my head around how lovely and shiny natural gold is!

After a long time living vicariously through Youtube (many thanks to Vo-Gus Prospecting, Dan Hurd, PioneerPauly), I took myself to Talgai State Forest (photo) last week with a hired SDC 2300 (Lost Treasures, Everton Park) and had a great time, finding a lot of iron and even more spear grass (photo). I was very impressed with the machine (less impressed with the spear grass that permeated every item of clothing, and one particular piece of wire that tried to escape me so many times that I didn't give it the honour of being put in my 'finds' bag but rather in my trash bag). I plan on dragging my partner out this week to dry pan Thanes Creek, and would love to see a dot or two. I'll take 20L of water along just in case I don't figure out the dry panning thing.
