Then they smash the furnace and drag out a massive lump of iron/steel. The swordsmith gets to choose only the purest and higher quality bits from the extremities of the lump and all the rest gets used to make tea kettles and farm tools.</p><p>The swordsmith has to further refine it to remove as many impurities as possible before its good enough to make a sword out of though.
